Service Details

Marilyn Lou Hulbert, 80, passed away on the 4th of July, 2017, at the Accura Health Nursing Center in Pleasantville, Iowa. Marilyn was born on September 4, 1936, in Orient, Iowa, to Wesley and Viola (White) Powers.

Marilyn loved spending time with her friends and relatives. As a young girl, she enjoyed horses and attending school. She graduated from Orient-Macksburg High School and briefly attended college in Nebraska. She was a member of Ft. Des Moines United Methodist Church. Marilyn married Roger Hulbert and together they had three children. While living on a farm northwest of Creston, she drove trucks to help haul grain to town. She was also a switchboard operator at Greater Community Hospital in Creston in addition to working at several nursing homes. She was a Worthy Grand Matron of the Eastern Star and stayed very active in her church. She was proud to play the organ for her church services several times. Marilyn had a baking business where she would sell cinnamon rolls, tea rings, doughnuts, and more to fund various needs in her life. Marilyn had a real servant’s heart. After 9/11, she took baked goods to fire and police stations to thank them for their service. She never met a stranger. She talked to anyone, anywhere, and she would always run into someone she knew.

Funeral services will be held at 11:00 a.m. on Tuesday, July 11, 2017, at St. John’s United Methodist Church, 4700 SW 14th Street in Des Moines. Visitation will begin one hour prior to the service. She will be laid to rest following the service at Prairie Lawn Cemetery in Creston, Iowa.
