Peggy L. Phares

June 30, 2017

Service Details

Peggy Louise Phares went home to her heavenly Father on Friday, June 30, 2017.

Peggy was born July 10, 1927, to Arthur and Dorothy (Phillips) Kalberg. She graduated from Lincoln High School in 1945 and began working at Meredith Publishing shortly thereafter.

She met the love of her life, Robert Phares, at Meredith. They were married on September 15, 1946, and were married for 63 years until his death in 2009. She quit work to stay home and be a mother to their two children, Arthur and Dorothy. She traveled the world with her husband and loved to talk about all of their adventures. Later in her life she began working for the Des Moines Public Schools as a before and after school care provider. She loved working with the kids and they loved her right back. She also loved spending time with her grandchildren and great grandchildren. She had a fun sense of humor and also a very strong sense of what she did and did not want. She spent the past 15 months living at Prairie Hills. Even though she often forgot that she lived there, she did enjoy being there. The staff did a great job of caring for her.

Peggy is survived by her children Art (Terri) Phares, and Dorothy (Dwayne) Hall; her grandchildren Brent (Mary) Phares, Rob (Jayce) Hall and Matt (and his special friend Stacy) Hall; her great grandchildren Cody, Ayden, Gracey, Landon and Hailey Hall and Samantha and Marley Phares and her brother John “Nick” (Mary) Kalberg. She was preceded in death by her loving husband, her parents, and her sister Nancy Nelson.

Visitation will begin at 9:30 a.m., with memorial service at 11:00 a.m., Saturday, July 8, 2017, at Lutheran Church of the Cross, 1701 8th Street SW, Altoona.

Memorial contributions may be directed to Taylor House Hospice or the Alzheimer’s Association.
