Darwin L. Boatwright

Darwin L. Boatwright, 92, died on Wednesday June 28, 2017 at Taylor House Hospice in Des Moines from cancer.

Darwin was born January 3, 1925 to Wayne and Faye (Tucker) Boatwright in Des Moines and lived most of his life in the Runnells area. On September 26, 1948, he was united in marriage to Mary Louise Spooner in Des Moines. She preceded him in death on December 22, 2000 after almost 52 years of marriage.

Darwin served in the Army during WWII and was a long time member of Michellville Christian Church. He was a retired carpenter and farmer. Darwin continued to be active, even in his later years, spending many days at the Runnells Community Center, playing cards and visiting with friends. He enjoyed going dancing on Wednesday evenings.

Darwin is survived by his children, Darrell (Sue) Boatwright of Cedar Rapids, Kathy (Mike) Ryan of Des Moines, and Larry (Deana) Boatwright of Runnells; grandchildren, Michelle Masterson, David Boatwright, Laura Sinclair, Steven Boatwright, Mark Boatwright, and Jessica (Boatwright) Powers; great-grandchildren, Caden, Reid, Ella, Reagan, Hunter, and Roxanne; fiancé, Myrtle Kurimski; and a host of other family and beloved friends.

He was preceded in death by his parents, Wayne and Faye Boatwright; and wife, Mary Boatwright.

Funeral services will be held 10 a.m. Monday, July 3, 2017 at Mitchellville Christian Church, 210 3rd Street NW, Mitchellville, with burial to follow at Mitchellville Cemetery. The family will receive visitors from 2 p.m. to 4 p.m. Sunday at Hamilton’s Altoona Funeral Home, 105 4th Street, Altoona.

In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be directed to Mitchellville Christian Church or Runnells Community Center in loving memory of Darwin.
