Monika Niccum
June 24, 2017
Monika Niccum, 80, passed away peacefully on June 24, 2017 at Kavanagh on 56th Street surrounded by her loving family.
Monika spent most of her younger years in Lenggries, Germany before meeting the love of her life, Bob, who swept her right off her feet and straight to the United States. They were married in 1960 and were blessed with many children and grandchildren that brought them so much happiness and joy throughout their entire lives. Monika lived out her strong faith daily and was a member of Christ the King Catholic Church for over 30 years, where she enjoyed being involved with the RCIA program.
Monika’s beautiful, compassionate heart was one of the first things you would notice about her, along with her twinkling, smiling eyes that would light up any room she set foot in. She had a heart of gold and would do absolutely anything for anyone, whether she knew you or not. She never knew an enemy and was loved by all who were blessed to have known her. Monika had such a genuine love for nature and animals, which was evident in her beautiful gardens she tended to with such passion and detailed care. She loved to travel the world and was so grateful to have close friendships from all over. Monika loved the Iowa State Fair and enjoyed countless hours and so many smiles, walking around with those she loved.
Monika worked many years as a Porcelain Doll Artist at Jo’s Dolls. Her favorite “job” however, was being the best wife, mother, grandmother and “Oma” she could possibly be. Monika took great pride in cooking delicious, elaborate meals overflowing with love, and sharing those with her family and friends. Above all else, Monika treasured the precious time spent and memories made with her family, especially her grandchildren and great-grandchildren.
Monika is survived by her loving husband of 57 years, Bob; children, Norbert Niccum, Pete (Becky) Niccum and Cindy Niccum Friesth; grandchildren, Keegan (Jerrica) Niccum, Seth Niccum, Evan and Anna Friesth; great-grandchildren, Gracie and Ruger Niccum; sister, Anna Maria (Henry) Froehlich and a host of nieces, nephews, cousins, other loving family members and dear friends.
She was preceded in death by her parents, Clemens and Anna Wolf and her brother, Alfons Wolf.
Visitation will be held from 5 to 7 p.m. with a Rosary Service starting at 7 p.m. Wednesday, June 28, 2017 at Hamilton’s Southtown Funeral Home, 5400 SW 9th Street. Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated at 10:30 a.m. Thursday, June 29th at Christ the King Catholic Church, 5711 SW 9th Street. Monika will be laid to rest at 2 p.m. Thursday at the Iowa Veterans Cemetery in Van Meter.

I met Monica not long after we moved in across the street. We became good friends through the years. Both Bob and Monica became like family to both Randy and I. I hope they are up there looking down on us. I will miss and think of you everyday. My prayers go out to all who got to know you.

My deepest sympathy to the family of Monika. I always enjoyed seeing her at Mass. Years ago, Monika sat with my late parents at Mass. Sometimes my daughter and I would be there, too. Monika had a beautiful smile. She is in a better place now. I will continue to keep her in my prayers. I know she is with Jesus.
