Service Details

Helen Rowland, 92, of Des Moines formerly of Tracy/Pershing, Iowa, passed away peacefully surrounded by her family on Tuesday June 13, 2017 at Bickford Cottages. Helen Louise was born on June 27, 1924 in Des Moines to K. Dorothy (Clapp) and Harry W. King.

Helen graduated from Lincoln High School in 1942. She worked at Look Magazine. She would always say, “I’d rather work for Look than look for work”. After Look, she became a farm wife following her marriage on November 16, 1958 to John Merideth Rowland. She loved to bowl, quilt, crochet and spend time with her family. She was an avid sports fan – especially for the Cubs and all of Iowa’s teams. She previously was a member of Zion United Methodist Church in Pershing, Iowa, the Lincoln High Alumni Association and she made quilts for the NICU/PICU units at Blank’s Children’s Hospital. She will be greatly missed.

Those left to cherish her memory are her children, R. Truman Wood, Harry Wilbur (Chris) Wood and Karen Helene (Steve) Dilling; six grandchildren, Marla Wood, Anna Wood, Sarah Wood, Christina (Dilling) and Tyler Hill, Elizabeth (Dilling) and Glen Kroese and Michael Dilling; nine great-grandchildren, Brendon Deese, Dalton Deese, Caleb Hill, Abygail Hill, Natalie Hill, Samantha Hill, Lilyanna Kroese, Julietta Kroese and Hunter Kroese; and numerous nieces, nephews, other loving family and special friends.

She was preceded in death by her parents; her husband, John; siblings, Al King, Bob King, Ray King, Dorothy (King) Ness and Jim King; granddaughter, Kelly Lynn (Wood) Deese and daughter in-law, Linda Sue Wood.

Funeral services will be held at 11:30 a.m. on Saturday, June 17, 2017 at Hamilton’s Southtown Funeral Home, 5400 SW 9th Street. Family will start greeting visitors at 10:00 a.m. at the funeral home on Saturday. Burial will be held at 3:00 p.m. on Saturday at Graceland Cemetery in Knoxville, Iowa.
