Hazel Biegger

Hazel E. Biegger, 97, passed away on Tuesday, January 1, 2008. Hazel was born on January 10, 1910 to George W. and Agnes (Fiedler) Carpenter in Fedora, SD. She married George Biegger on November 22, 1933. They moved to Des Moines in 1941. Hazel worked for Katz Drug Stores and then was one of the first women hired to work at the Des Moines Post Office. She retired from the Postal Service in 1979. Hazel was an avid supporter of Dowling High School, attending football games well into her 90’s. She was a member of the Basilica of St. John, Catholic Daughters and the State Commander of the Navy Mother’s Club of Iowa.
Hazel is survived by her daughter, Margarite “Marge” Cozad of Des Moines; sons, Tony (Janie) Biegger of Papillion, NE, Robert (Laura) Biegger of Altoona, James (Karen) Biegger of Maxwell, IA and Thomas (Cindy) Biegger, of Altoona; daughter-in-law, Norma Biegger of Polk City; sisters, Irene Berger of Marion, IA and Marjorie Wiese of Fedora, SD; brother, Douglas Carpenter of Watertown, SD; 21 grandchildren, 29 great-grandchildren and two great great-grandchildren. She was preceded in death by her parents; daughters, Joann Pierce and Kathleen Biegger; son, Frank Biegger; sisters, Helen Rodgers, Marion Roby, Thelma Page and Vivian Carpenter; brothers, Kenneth Carpenter and Harold Carpenter; daughter-in-law, Barbara Biegger; sons-in-law, Jerry Pierce and Wayne Cozad.
Visitation will be held from 6 to 8 p.m. Friday at Hamilton’s Funeral Home, 605 Lyon St. with a rosary at 7 p.m. Mass of Christian Burial will be at 10:30 a.m. Saturday, January 5, 2008 at the Basilica of St. John with burial at Glendale Cemetery.
In lieu of flowers, the family requests memorial contributions to the Basilica of St. John, Dowling High School or Iowa Health Hospice.

Mary Ellen and I had been thinking of Hazel. We were trying to figure out just when she would turn 100. So guess she was on our minds. You have our sympathy. She was a hard working great Mom.
