Service Details

William Bowen, beloved husband, father and grandfather, passed away January 1, 2008 at his home in Altoona, Iowa. Visitation is planned from 5-8 p.m. Thursday, January 3, 2008 at the Altoona United Methodist Church.
Funeral services will be held at 10 a.m. Friday, January 4, 2008 at the Altoona United Methodist Church. Immediately after the service, a luncheon will be held at the church and burial will follow at Union Mills Cemetery in Mahaska County.
Bill was born August 31, 1942 in Iowa City, Iowa to John William and Edna (Sentman) Bowen. He received his Bachelor’s Degree from the University of Iowa and his Master’s from Webster College in St. Louis, Missouri. He served in the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers during the Vietnam Conflict, earning two bronze stars and a silver star as well as other merits. After leaving the Army, Bill was employed at Ruan and worked there until his death.
An avid cyclist, Bill participated in 14 RAGBRAIs and was a part of an Altoona cycling club. He was a dedicated member of the Altoona United Methodist Church, serving as head usher and lending his skills to the United Methodist Men. It was unofficially acknowledged that Bill had the best-looking yard on his block. He was meticulous, thoughtful, bossy, loving, always willing to help others and he will be greatly missed.
He is survived in death by his wife of thirty-five years, Kathryn; his children: John Bowen (Rene) of Kansas City, MO, Mary Bowen of Altoona and Sarah Wessels (Zachary) of Traverse City, MI.; two grandchildren; his sister, Judy Schroeder (Larry) of Iowa City and his nephew, Scott of Cambridge, MA. Bill was preceded in death by his parents.
In lieu of flowers, donations can be made to the Altoona United Methodist Church. Hamilton’s Altoona Funeral Home is handling arrangements.
