William Bowen
January 01, 2008
William Bowen, beloved husband, father and grandfather, passed away January 1, 2008 at his home in Altoona, Iowa. Visitation is planned from 5-8 p.m. Thursday, January 3, 2008 at the Altoona United Methodist Church.
Funeral services will be held at 10 a.m. Friday, January 4, 2008 at the Altoona United Methodist Church. Immediately after the service, a luncheon will be held at the church and burial will follow at Union Mills Cemetery in Mahaska County.
Bill was born August 31, 1942 in Iowa City, Iowa to John William and Edna (Sentman) Bowen. He received his Bachelor’s Degree from the University of Iowa and his Master’s from Webster College in St. Louis, Missouri. He served in the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers during the Vietnam Conflict, earning two bronze stars and a silver star as well as other merits. After leaving the Army, Bill was employed at Ruan and worked there until his death.
An avid cyclist, Bill participated in 14 RAGBRAIs and was a part of an Altoona cycling club. He was a dedicated member of the Altoona United Methodist Church, serving as head usher and lending his skills to the United Methodist Men. It was unofficially acknowledged that Bill had the best-looking yard on his block. He was meticulous, thoughtful, bossy, loving, always willing to help others and he will be greatly missed.
He is survived in death by his wife of thirty-five years, Kathryn; his children: John Bowen (Rene) of Kansas City, MO, Mary Bowen of Altoona and Sarah Wessels (Zachary) of Traverse City, MI.; two grandchildren; his sister, Judy Schroeder (Larry) of Iowa City and his nephew, Scott of Cambridge, MA. Bill was preceded in death by his parents.
In lieu of flowers, donations can be made to the Altoona United Methodist Church. Hamilton’s Altoona Funeral Home is handling arrangements.

Dear Bowen Family,
I was so saddened to hear about Bill's passing. As an employee at Ruan for 23 years are paths crossed frequently at work. His attention to detail could be trying a times, but that is what made him such a great employee. You always knew that Bill would put his heart and soul into everything he did. I will miss him very much!!
Kathy, I'm so glad I was able to enjoy those wonderful cookies you made through out the years.

I had the pleasure of working with Bill at Ruan for 15 years. He was as dedicated a member of the Ruan Team as one could find. Although we rarely found time, I really enjoyed talking with Bill. I learned just today of the honor's Bill received while in the Army Corp of Engineers. Having known Bill, it does not surprise me that he never made mention of these honors.
My thoughts and prayers, and those of Bill's entire Ruan Family, are with you. May you rest in the peace that he is in a place that is second to no other.
God Bless,
Mike Smith

Dear Kathy and family,
Words can't express my sympathies to all of you. I was very saddened to hear of Bill's passing.
Bill was such a wonderful friend to me and my kids, always willing to help the "dingy blond" down the street, keep air in the kids' bike tires, and really knew how to "trim" the trees (I never knew there was a house across the street until Bill trimmed my trees and opened my view!!) There are so many fond memories that I have as your neighbor and family friend.
My thoughts and prayers are with you all.
Love, Peggy
