Melvin E. Purscell
May 23, 2017
Melvin Eugene Purscell was an unsung Vietnam War hero, whose life was cut short by Agent Orange. He was a mechanic at John Deere for many years, and later drove truck locally and over-the-road. He enjoyed many happy years of riding, custom building and restoring Harley’s and even an old Indian. He was a top state-ranked motocross racer when he was young, and frequent hobby stock racer at the Iowa Fairgrounds in his 40’s. His motocross and stock car racing number was 58.
Mr. Purscell was born on November 6, 1951, in Des Moines, son of Joseph and Luella Purscell. He is survived by his wife, Carol, his mother who lives in Florida, his sister, Mary Jo Pezzi and brother, Richard Purscell of Florida, and four older brothers, Jim Purscell of Arkansas, Wayne, Jerry and Larry Purscell, all of Des Moines. He is also survived by his four children, Joe Purscell of Waukee, Julie Gilkey, Karen Purscell and Christina Purscell, all of Des Moines, 12 grandchildren, and one great-grandchild on the way.
He joined the Army and fought in Vietnam at age 19. He drove “The Mighty Mini” and other portable missile-launching trucks. That is where he acquired a strong faith in God that continued over the years. He died on May 23, 2017. He was 65.
Visitation will be held from 5:00 to 8:00 p.m., Thursday, May 25, 2017, at Hamilton’s Funeral Home, 605 Lyon Street, Des Moines. Funeral service will begin at 1:00 p.m., Friday, May 26, 2017, also at Hamilton’s, and will conclude with burial at Winterset Cemetery, Winterset, Iowa.
Condolences may be expressed at www.HamiltonsFuneralHome.com.

My brother, Melvin brought the family together for his last journey home, and we can certainly thank him for uniting us around him. I drove by our childhood home today on 5th Avenue, near Mercy Hospital and thought of all the kids we grew up with, including John Silk. I thought of the Boy Scouts -- when our dad was a Scout leader and our mom was a Cub Scout "Den Mother." I thought of Trinity Methodist Church, and Sabin Elementary... and all the kids, who moved away and started their lives in all corners of the USA. I hope we will connect on Facebook or some place. Ride Free brother, Melvin and may the Peace of God be with you. - Mary Jo

I remember Melvin from North H.S. There is a special place in Heaven for Melvin and all veterans who served our country. I know you are sad, but remember the good times and happy memories with Melvin and he will live on in your hearts forever. Take care and God Bless.

It has been 25 years since I was able to spend quality time with Melvin and Carol when we attended concerts and enjoyed fellowship at Melvin's famous hog roasts, oh yes, and that special sky dive wedding. Who else could have planned something like that? The good old days! Since then he has taken very good care of my sister, their dogs, wolves and bikes. To quote one of our favorite bands Melvin, "Wish You Were Here". Well actually brother, you still are, in our hearts and our fond memories. So as you make your last bike ride to Winterset and on through the heavens, "Shine on You Crazy Diamond"! Your Family, Friends, and Country Love, Remember, and Salute You!

I remember playing when we were kids.
But haven't seen him in years, it seemed that we all went our own ways as we got older.
I have wondered through the years were he, Mary and Dickie were at and if they ever thought of us or remembered us.
He will be missed but always in my thoughts.
I am Jim's second daughter!!
I will be at the cemetery tomorrow
when they do the Military Honors I am part of the VFW here in Winterset, I am proud to be in the VFW and see them do the honors for my uncle!! Peace and God be with you all at this time, you are all in my thoughts and prays!!

I was very sorry to read of Melvin's passing. We attended Sabin grade school together and I have fond and lasting memories of him. I offer my deepest sympathy to all his family members.

I know how hard this is I lost my other half 4 years ago but he is in a place that we can only imagine in our dreams. And he is riding with the Angels.

To the family:
It's hard to lose a close loved one. I know I lost Bill just over a year ago to lung cancer. May God ease your grief and sorrow. May God bless each one of you. Remember we will see him again.
