Salvador "Sal" Ayala

Salvador Albert Ayala, 94, passed away on May 15, 2017 surrounded by his loving family. Visitation will be held Sunday, May 21, 2017 from 4:00 to 6:00 p.m. with the Rosary prayed and a Wake Service at 4:00 p.m. at Hamilton’s Southtown Funeral Home, 5400 SW 9th Street. Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated at 10:00 a.m. Monday, May 22nd at St. Ambrose Cathedral, 607 High Street. Salvador will be laid to rest at 12:30 p.m. Monday the Iowa Veterans Cemetery in Van Meter.
Sal was born June 3, 1922 in Waco, Texas. He lived most of his life in Des Moines. He served in the U.S. Navy during WWII. Sal retired from Jewett Lumber Company, where he worked for 40 years. After his retirement he continued his passion of building and remodeling homes. He was a member of St. Ambrose Cathedral Church and a founding member of Our Lady of Guadalupe Chapel. He was also a member of the American Legion Post 731.
He enjoyed spending time with his family, gardening, fishing and woodworking.
Left to honor his memory are his wife of 70 years, Angie; son, Sal Jr. (Jan) Ayala; daughter, Tina (Rick) Thompson; grandchildren, Abby (Kevin) Campbell, Brad (Alissa) Thompson, Matt (Stacey) Thompson, Shanda (Tim) Otten, Robert Ayala, Anthony (Katie) Ayala and Ashley Ayala; eight great-grandchildren; brother, Sam (Expo) Ayala; and sister, Josephine Thompson.
He was preceded in death by his parents; brothers, John, Tony, Joe and Frank; and his sisters, Rose Grimes, Connie Rivera and Delores Rivera.
Memorial contributions may be directed to St. Ambrose Cathedral or the Iowa Veterans Cemetery.

Little did I know when we became neighbors, I would be blessed by such a kind, dear soul and good friend! Sal was one in a million, I miss him so much, but there will always be a smile when I think of him. Love and condolences to his family and friends.
