Sophia A. Toscano
May 15, 2017
Sophia Alma Toscano passed away the morning of Monday May 15, 2017 at her home in Des Moines, Iowa at the age of 35.
Sophia is survived by her two beloved sons, Darian Toscano and Evante Toscano; mother, Trish Beck; father, Pedro Toscano Jr.; step-father, Randall Beck; sisters, Bianca Garilli, Nicole Starling, Danila Toscano, Anais Toscano and Tiffany Toscano; brothers-in-law, Anthony Garilli and Rico Starling; niece, Nadia Garilli; nephews, Joey Garilli, Marco Starling and Alesso Starling; and much adored cat, Shadow.
Sophia was born on June 30, 1981 in Yuma, Arizona. She graduated from Winterset High School in 1999. She went on to achieve her Bachelors of Nursing to become a Registered Nurse in Des Moines. Sophia worked most recently at The Village, Mercy Medical Center, and Broadlawns. Sophia’s life work was serving and helping others, whether they were her family, patients, co-workers, friends or neighbors.
Her deeply felt compassion and empathy for others combined with her unequaled sense of humor and love for laughter left a lasting impression on everyone she met. She was also quite skilled in being the loudest and proudest mom at her boys’ sporting events; her two sons were the center of her world and they will continue to be a testimony to her strength and to the power of love.
Sophia-“We love you to the moon and back”
A memorial service will be held in remembrance of Sophia at 10 a.m. Wednesday, May 24, 2017 at Eternity Church, 2000 NW 100th St. Clive, Iowa 50325.
In lieu of flowers, the family requests donations to assist her sons in their future academic endeavors.

I am so very sorry to hear about Sophia. She was such a wonderful woman, a good friend, incredible nurse. She always asked if the others that she worked with needed help. She loved her boys and was so very proud of them. She was such a life force. I will miss you my friend.

Sophia
What a beautiful person inside and out. I remember meeting for the 1st time when I moved into Somerset apartments. We lived straight down the hall on opposite sides. Always doing something with the boys or for the boys. Life was all about being their mom. So sweet and genuine yet never hesitated to get serious if needed looking out for the boys and making sure they did the right thing. My two girls starting hanging with the boys, spending the whole summer at the pool and started going to school together the following year. The boys reflect how wonderful of a mom they had. Always so polite and respectful regardless of where they're at or who they were with. Even at young ages, both boys always stood up for what is right and had no problem getting after one of my girls if they did something....the work of a great Mom! It was a great summer getting to know Sophia and the friendship was the inevitable. We had so much in common sharing our passion for nursing. Our talks about life...Sophia had a way about her, she opened her heart and like magic an hour or two had passed. She helped me in ways she never even knew and so unselfishly, as she had been going through tough times as well yet listened with true compassion and understanding. I remember her saying how much she loved being a nurse wanting to bring peace and happiness to the world and whoever she encountered. It has been a few years since we had last talked but I feel lucky to have had the opportunity to know her. My girls and I are deeply saddened and my heart pours out to the boys with many prayers for this difficult time....the loss of their beautiful mom! Your smile will forever brighten the world and you will be greatly missed!

Sophia and I worked together at the Village, and had kept in touch off and on, as she moved on in her career. I'm sure you know what a wonderful nurse she was, and how many people's lives she touched and impacted. Prayers for you all, especially her boys. She always spoke with such pride and love for you both! I'm so very sorry for your loss.
