Richard Eugene True, 80, passed away Saturday, May 13, 2017. Visitation will be held Tuesday, May 16, 2017 from 5pm to 8pm at Hamilton’s on Westown Parkway, 3601 Westown Parkway in West Des Moines. A private burial service will be held at Iowa Veterans Cemetery in Adel, Iowa at a later date.
Richard was born February 22, 1937 in Lake City, IA to Marie (Harms) and James True. Richard married the love of his life and high school sweetheart, Geraldine (Jerry) Renfro on October 19, 1956. He then joined the US Air Force and spent four years as a flight maintenance technician. In 1960, he joined the Iowa Air National Guard and over his thirty-three years of service he worked as a Flight Technician, Crew Chief, Flight Engineer, Flight Chief and finished his career with the rank of Chief Master Sargent as the Branch Chief for the Organizational Maintenance Branch of the 132nd Fighter Wing. In 1990 Richard was named Senior NCO of the Year for the Iowa Air National Guard.
He is survived by his loving family, wife, Geraldine; son, Brian (Laurie); daughter, Beth (Gus) Johnson; granddaughter, Emily True; and sister, Charlotte Johnson. Richard was preceded in death by his parents, James and Marie; sister, Delores; and brother, Ron.

I was, also, from Lake City and worked full time at the 132d FW. I knew Dick for many years and appreciated his professionalism, dedication and commitment to everything he did. He was a role model for anyone in the military. God Speed, Dick!

My prayers are with you. Chief True was a role model for us all and made each of us in the 132d FW better people and airmen for having known him. It was truly a privilege to have known and served with him. I'll miss him.
