Kari Saunders
Of Pleasant Hill, Iowa
Kari Saunders was a loving wife, mother, and friend who passed away suddenly on May 10, 2017. She was always willing to help others (whether they wanted her help or not!), including the poor teenager she would leave school supplies and clothes for without ever meeting, the single mothers whose groceries she'd pay for before Thanksgiving, the elderly German woman who roomed with her mother that she cared for, and numerous other acts.
She loved spending time with her family and pets (her dog Belle and cat Shadow) and riding with the top down in her red Mini Cooper.
Kari was born in Ogallala, Nebraska on January 22, 1963. She was raised in Fort Dodge, Iowa where she graduated high school in 1981. Kari spent most of her life working in careers that helped children, including many years running an in home daycare and the last 20 years at the Iowa Division of Criminal Investigation's Sex Offender Registry Unit. She was married to her husband James for 33 years and had two children Jessica (Loren Corkey) and Stephen (Rachel Clemens). She is also survived by her father, Jerald; sister, Judi (Dave) Smith; and brother, Dale Miller. Kari was preceded in death by her mother, Marilyn Locke; and brother, Mark Miller.
As an organ donor Kari gave as much in death as she did in life. Her bright smile, kind heart, and contagious laughter will be missed.
Family will greet friends from 4 to 7 p.m., Monday, May 15, 2017 at Hamilton’s Funeral Home, 605 Lyon Street, Des Moines. Funeral service will be held at 10 a.m., Tuesday, May 16th at Oakwood United Methodist Church, 400 NE 56th Street, Pleasant Hill, burial to follow at Oakwood Cemetery.
Memorial Contributions may be directed to either Iowa Donor Network, Iowa Chapter Children’s Advocacy Center, or Heinz 57 Pet Rescue in memory of Kari.

Jim,
We will pray the Lord comforts you during this sad and difficult time. I will always remember how Kari would send me those really funny electronic animated birthday cards with a detective spin to the story line. I appreciated the fact that she took the time to send those to me. She will be greatly missed. We are thinking of you and your family.

Jim, words are inadequate at a time like this but know how very sorry we are for your loss. Losing a spouse is tragic and we cannot fathom the pain and suffering you are experiencing. Blessed are those that mourn for they shall be comforted. We pray that this will be especially true for you as you mourn now and in the difficult days ahead, and that God will give you the strength to see you through this sad and difficult time.

This is so crazy to try and understand; but then death has no boundaries. Filling the void with many years worth of memories helps ease the loss with time...but those sad moments always creep back in once n awhile. She loved her family so much she would call me to check addresses around UNI to be sure her children were looking in safe areas. You all have your memories; cherish them. I wish you all well. Steve

I am very saddened after hearing about Kari and this great loss to your family. Kari was a very good friend of mine from Fort Dodge Senior High. I played the organ at her wedding in fact. I had many road trips with Kari in college and often visited her in Iowa City. The last time we saw each other was in the late 90's. She always had a smile and was always happy to help anyone at all times. She will be missed by all who knew her. My thoughts and prayers are with you at this difficult time.

Saunders Family: May the Peace, Communion, and the Fellowship of God rest and abide with you all from this day forth. One of my favorite memories of Kari, she may have been all of 12 years old, is the day we all were rogueing shattercane from a milo field on by farm in rural Ne and she led the bunch. Go Kari

Jim, Stephen, and Jessica,
We are so very sorry for your loss. It seems so unbelievable. Having only met you all so recently, we felt so welcome with Jerry's family! To us, God needed Kari in Heaven. We felt how much Love was in the air and we're sure Kari was happy and felt it too on April 29! We are so very thankful we met you, Jim, Kari, and your beautiful family and all of Jerry's family! We will meet again whether it be in Heaven or on Earth! May God Bless You, Jim, and your whole family! Our thoughts, prayers, and Love remain with you always!
