Kari Saunders
Of Pleasant Hill, Iowa
Kari Saunders was a loving wife, mother, and friend who passed away suddenly on May 10, 2017. She was always willing to help others (whether they wanted her help or not!), including the poor teenager she would leave school supplies and clothes for without ever meeting, the single mothers whose groceries she'd pay for before Thanksgiving, the elderly German woman who roomed with her mother that she cared for, and numerous other acts.
She loved spending time with her family and pets (her dog Belle and cat Shadow) and riding with the top down in her red Mini Cooper.
Kari was born in Ogallala, Nebraska on January 22, 1963. She was raised in Fort Dodge, Iowa where she graduated high school in 1981. Kari spent most of her life working in careers that helped children, including many years running an in home daycare and the last 20 years at the Iowa Division of Criminal Investigation's Sex Offender Registry Unit. She was married to her husband James for 33 years and had two children Jessica (Loren Corkey) and Stephen (Rachel Clemens). She is also survived by her father, Jerald; sister, Judi (Dave) Smith; and brother, Dale Miller. Kari was preceded in death by her mother, Marilyn Locke; and brother, Mark Miller.
As an organ donor Kari gave as much in death as she did in life. Her bright smile, kind heart, and contagious laughter will be missed.
Family will greet friends from 4 to 7 p.m., Monday, May 15, 2017 at Hamilton’s Funeral Home, 605 Lyon Street, Des Moines. Funeral service will be held at 10 a.m., Tuesday, May 16th at Oakwood United Methodist Church, 400 NE 56th Street, Pleasant Hill, burial to follow at Oakwood Cemetery.
Memorial Contributions may be directed to either Iowa Donor Network, Iowa Chapter Children’s Advocacy Center, or Heinz 57 Pet Rescue in memory of Kari.

Jim - I can still see Kari's smiling face when crossing paths with her in the hallways here in the Oran Pape Building. I hadn't gotten to know her other than greetings here and there, but she sure seemed to be a genuinely happy person. She had kind of a glow about her and her positive attitude was contagious. I will miss seeing her around.

Dear Jim, Jessica and Stephen: We, Kari's family from Finland, want to express our deepest condolences for your loss. Kari became a member of our family when she stayed with us in 1980 as a Lions Club youth exchange student. She charmed us with her radiant smile and happy personality. We kept in touch ever since. We were delighted to get an invitation to Kari's and Jim's wedding, which Helena attended. In 1988, us both sisters visited Kari, Jim and little Jessica on our grand tour of US. Jessica came to Finland in 2006 to visit us while she was studying in Europe. Only two months ago Kari and Jessica flew over to Florida to meet Helena. It was so great to see Kari again after almost 30 years, even for just one day. Who would have guessed that it would be the last time. Jim, Jessica and Stephen, we want to wish you strength during this difficult time. In loving memories of Kari. Mother Ritva, and sisters Helena and Johanna with their families.

Words can not express our sadness in Kari's passing. Our sympathies are with your family in this time of need. We are all collectively praying with and for you and we offer this corporate prayer:
'Our Father in heaven, we lift Jim, Jessica and Stephen up to You. Their hearts are broken and their spirits mourn. We pray that you grant Jim the courage to walk through these days and the strength to carry his family through. We ask your grace, that exceeds our understanding to cover Jessica and Stephen in love and peace. We ask that You give them all wisdom - wisdom that can only come from You. We pray that You send Your spirit to comfort them and that in their grief, they may know Your presence and love. We call on you now God, in Jesus name, make your power and peace known to Jim and his family. Amen.'
