Carol A. (Bircher) Shilling, peacefully left her place on earth Thursday, April 27, 2017 surrounded by family. Born December 14, 1939 in Ottumwa, Iowa to Lonnie and Edna Bircher.
Carol married David L. Shilling on May 28, 1960.
Those left to honor her memory are Geronda Lewis and Lynndon (Karen) Shilling; granddaughters, Krystal (Carl) Whisler of Carlisle, Katie (Shea) Carey of Des Moines, Alyssa (Caleb) Logemann of Ames and Danielle Shilling of Iowa City; 4 great grandsons, Cameron, Cejay, Corwyn Whisler and Cavvyn Lewis. Siblings Mary Ellen Lunkley of Ottumwa, Donna Howard of Orchard and Dan (Connie) Bircher of Ottumwa. Along with many nieces, nephews and beloved friends. She is preceded in death by her parents, her son Roland, brother Gordon and husband David Shilling
Funeral services will be held at Hamilton’s Altoona Funeral Home, 105 4th Street, Altoona, IA on Monday, May 1, 2017 at 10:00 a.m. Visitation will be held on Sunday, April 30, 2017, from 3:00 – 6:00 p.m., the funeral home.
Memorial contributions may be directed to Hertko Hollow and the Church of the Brethren in Prairie City.

Even though Carol was my 2nd cousin by marriage. I always called her and dave aunt and uncle. May you find peace and say hi to mom and dad. She is in good hands and great company !

Lynndon, Geronda and family,
Our hearts hold many memories of Aunt Carol. She was a woman of great character and she will be missed. Love to you all. May your hearts be comforted by the fact that Uncle Dave was there to greet her home.

Dearest Family,
I am sorry to hear of your loss. Aunt Carol was always so sweet. I enjoyed getting letters from her, and will treasure my childhood memories visiting her and Uncle Dave. She will be missed. Sending my love and prayers from Milwaukee. Go in Peace.
