Betty Plymesser
April 19, 2017
Betty Louise Wehrli was born in Missouri Valley, Iowa on September 8, 1930 as the oldest child of Fred David and Lillian Garnet Wehrli. Betty grew up in Greenfield, Iowa, completed a year of “normal” school training at Creston Junior College and returned to the Greenfield/Dexter area to teach country school for three years in a one-room schoolhouse. On May 7, 1950, Betty was married to Ira Earnest Plymesser Jr. and continued to teach country school until their move to Des Moines, Iowa in 1953. Betty then exchanged her career as a country-school teacher to raise her growing family she would lovingly refer to as the five J’s. In 1975 when her youngest child was completing elementary school, Betty went to work for the State of Iowa at the Department of Public Health in the Vital Records Division where she would retire in 1996.
Betty loved cooking, embroidery, and celebrating the holidays. Her children were blessed with the memory of waking up in a home where Mom was already up in the morning with a hot cup of tea in her tin cup and reading her Bible in “Mom’s living room chair.”
Betty never learned to drive a car and thus was a member of the Bible-believing church where her children attended. She loved her church families at Faith Baptist, Aurora Avenue Bible, and Capitol City Baptist Church.
Looking back, Betty wanted to impart to her grandchildren that the single most important choice she made was to be a Christian and to live as one. Her legacy that she felt was most important to be conveyed to her grandchildren was, “teach them to know the love of Jesus.”
Betty is survived by her four daughters; Jacqueline Plymesser, Julie (Rodney) Nelson, Joy (Arthur) Prouty, and Jennifer (Stephen) Breeden; her beloved granddaughters Katherine Nichole Breeden and Emily Faith Breeden; her daughter-in-law Mamie (Jeff) Plymesser; her sisters Deloris Plymesser and Donna Farber, and brother Fred “Butch” (Bonnie) Wehrli; and many nieces and nephews; of which all her family were blessings to Betty.
Preceding Betty in death are her parents Fred and Lillian Wehrli and her sons Michael Steven Plymesser and Jeffery Lynn Plymesser.
Visitation will be held from 4:00 to 7:00 p.m., Friday, April 21, 2017, at Hamilton’s Funeral Home, 605 Lyon Street, Des Moines. I heard stories of Betty through her children. Cherish all the memories. She has left this world but not your hearts.

I did not know Betty personally, but I know her family, and if that is a true reflection of Betty, then what a wonderful mother she was. Cherish the memories. Hugs and prayers.
