April 08, 2017
Carl Jamieson Grant of Des Moines, Iowa, passed away on Saturday, April 8, 2017 of respiratory failure at his home.
Carl was born January 18, 1932, in Des Moines, and was adopted as an infant by Carl Jamieson Grant, Sr. and Elsie Gertrude Froendt. He graduated from East High School in 1950 and attended college at the Illinois Institute of Technology, graduating in 1954. It was in Chicago that he met Marcene Elaine Carlson. Carl and Marcene were married in Bismarck, ND.
After serving a stint in the army, they settled in Des Moines where he joined the firm of LaMair, Mulock, and Condon retiring as a partner after a career of 32 years.
Carl lived life to the fullest and had many varied interests. He was passionate about tennis throughout his life. He also greatly enjoyed golf, fishing, and bicycle riding and always made sure he had one of these on his calendar with his friends. He loved to travel and had many great vacations with Marcene especially in Colorado and Hawaii. Carl had many community interests. The highlights include his volunteer work with the YMCA, Ballet Iowa, Cambio Club, and Special Olympics. He felt that community service was an important part of a full life.
While Carl had many interests his true joy came from his family and many friends. He was loving, supportive, and generous to all he loved. He genuinely cared about people and what they were interested in. He is survived by Marcene Grant, his wife of 62 years; daughter, Beth and her husband Barry and their children, Matthew and his wife Rose, daughter Elsie and son Benjamin; daughter, Laurie Paulson and her husband Eric, and their children, Adam and Grant; son, Eric Grant and his husband Anthony Christmas; his sister, Carolyn Cline; and his nieces and nephews.

I wish i had the words to write...............when i was 8 i was taken from my mother and givin to the system. I was a young rebellious kid out to do everything an adult said not to, causing trouble and just in such a bad place as a kid looking for trouble around every corner. Then the state introduced Carl into my life, he was my mentor. He was always taking me fishing and to play tenise, buying me new tenise racket so i could play at school or at the park when he wasnt around. All he cared about is me having a safe space to talk and to be able to know that i can just let go and be myself. Showed me the love a father would show his own son since mine was never around. I lost contact with him and i found his obit today. I cant believe he has been gone 7 years and i didnt even know. Thank you for all u did for me. i have missed u everyday since i lost contact due to adoptive parents and i regret not being able to find u sooner. Cant wait to see u at the pearly gates Carl, show them angles that nasty backhand u got on the tenise court, we all have a piece of us missing. rest easy see u soon
