Richard Glen Arey
April 02, 2017
Richard Glenn Arey, 78, passed away April 2, 2017 at Unity Point Health Des Moines Methodist. The family is planning a celebration of life at a later date.
Richard was born October 14, 1938 in Washington D.C. to Lester and Lucille Arey. He grew up in Creston, Iowa where he met and married his high school sweetheart Verna Siverly. The couple was blessed with two children. Richard was privileged to have served in the Army Reserves for 8 years. Together, with Verna, they managed apartment complexes for over 22 years. Richard was a lifetime member of the Elks Lodge #605 in Creston serving many chairs, as well as a Past Exalted Ruler. He was passionate about all sports, and while he cheered for all Iowa sports teams he was most loyal to the Iowa Hawkeyes and a diehard Denver Broncos fan. Rich’s grandkids and great grandkids were his heart and joy and there was always a sparkle in his eyes when they were over to visit. He was always sure to have everyone fed before anyone left his house with a full stomach. He had a joy for gardening and loved being outside bringing life to new treasures.
Richard is survived by his loving wife of 60 years, Verna of Des Moines; daughter, Kathy Schrodt of Creston; grandchildren, Amber (Cody) Scharf of Marion, Emily (Matt) Rosendahl of Des Moines and Zachery (fiancé, Megan Rion) Arey of Cedar Falls; great-grandchildren, Brecken and Brixley Scharf and Madison Rosendahl; daughter-in law, Becky Arey of Des Moines; sister, Reffa (Gil) Mayne of Creston; brother, Wayne (Dar) Arey of Florida; sisters-in-law, Bernie Arey of Colorado and Betty Arey of Washington; and a host of extended family and friends.
He was preceded in death by his parents; son, Marty Arey; and his brothers, Ted Arey and Carlton Arey.
Memorial contributions may be directed to the family in loving memory of Richard.

So sorry to hear of this sad news. Ray called and told us. I'm sorry that I didn't keep up with you all on Skype. I am not very good at that any more. Know that we have special memories of our management friends and the fun we had of traveling, eating & Goodwill shopping. So many of our gang is gone now. Must be our age! Take care of yourself and know you are in our thoughts and prayers.

To Verna and the Arey family.
Sad to hear of Rich's passing. My memories of Rich to back to the days when he managed the fertilizer plant at Creston.I was the FELCO guy and wrote many orders for anhydrous and dry fertilizer with him. I enjoyed spending many hours with Rich and loved his sense of humor.
I was happy to reconnect with Rich Via FaceBook the last couple of years. Enjoyed following all his family activities. It was easy to see that he really loved his family.
Goodbye Rich. I will always think of the good memories.
