Paul Wigg
March 07, 2017
Paul Richard Wigg, 86, passed away March 6, 2017, of complications from a two year battle with MDS. He was born April 16, 1930, to Sopha and Martin Wigg in Des Moines, Iowa.
He married his best friend Mina Leah “Mike” Wigg September 5, 1954.
Paul is survived by sons, Richard and Chris (Patty) Wigg both of MN; five granddaughters, Kelsey (Kyle), Elyse, McKenna, Tristen, and Shailey; step grandsons, Liam and Dakota Dorn; great-grandson, Thayer; sister, Alice Gillham of VA; as well as many nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by his parents, and brothers, Carl and Kenny.
His working years were spent in construction sales. After retiring, he enjoyed his job as a school crossing guard from the Ankeny schools where he loved to ask the kids what they had learned that day. He was past member of the Hyperion Golf Club, ZaGaZig Shrine, a founding member of the Des Moines Ski Hawks, and a charter member of DSDOAM.
In his early years, the time spent bowling, snow and water skiing were favorites. He loved Pike fishing in MN and could be found on a golf course on a nice warm day. Most of all, he loved the time spent with his family.
The family would like to express their thanks to those wonderful people at the Veterans Hospital and to the very caring trauma team at Methodist Hospital.
In lieu of flowers, the family requests a donation be sent to the Shriners Children’s Hospital or the VA Central Iowa Health Care System in Des Moines.
Memorial services will be held at 2:00 p.m. on Saturday, March 11, 2017, at Ankeny First United Methodist Church (Uptown), 206 SW Walnut, with visitation from 12:30 – 2:00 p.m. A private burial will be held at a later date.

I had the pleasure and privilege of working with Paul as a crossing guard. He regaled me with his stories of family and fishing in MN. He was passionate about his work for veterans. Since both of us were veteran, we couldn't help tell each other war stories. He always had a smile for the kids and always asked them what they learned today. One of my favorite memories is him telling them to double time (a military term) to get them to cross the street a bit faster and them saying, "What does that mean." He was such a gentle man and my heart and prayers go out to Mike and the family.

Mike and Family:
So sorry to learn of Paul's passing yesterday. We used to have great times traveling to Minneapolis to watch the Iowa Hawkeyes on Dale Forrest's motor home and dining in downtown Minneapolis either on Friday Night or Saturday depending upon the time of the game. The "highlight" of the bi-annual trip was the stoppage and shopping at the Fairbault Wollen Mill outlet. Lately, it seems we have seen each other only at funerals. Mike, take care.
