Service Details

Kim Elaine Walter, 72, of Ottumwa, Iowa, died peacefully on March 5, 2017. Services will be Saturday, March 11, 2017 at Hamilton’s on Westown Parkway, 3601 Westown Parkway in West Des Moines with visitation from 11 a.m. to 12 p.m. and the memorial service at 12:00 p.m. Per Kim’s request, her remains have been cremated.

Kim was born July 8, 1944, to Carrol and Genevieve Tetrick, of Muscatine, Iowa. A graduate of Muscatine High School, she went on to earn a nursing degree and began practicing. On September 3, 1966, she married Thomas Walter, also of Muscatine, and by 1970, the two moved to Ottumwa, establishing a household and law practice for more than 34 years.

Kim was a consummate blend of class, style and brains, which she applied in equal aspects of her many pursuits. Whether encouraging a lifetime love of reading in her home, pursuing careers in nursing or horse training, Kim was an avid learner, accompanying her husband in much of his legal work. She also found time to raise three children and play multiple roles as the love of her husband's life, a homemaker, hostess, sister, friend and confidante. Kim treasured her role as a grandmother and was comforted that her grandchildren are part of her legacy.

She is survived by her children, Jason (Jessica) Walter of Detroit, MI, Gina (Brian) Walter-Dunn, of Ottumwa, IA and Josie (Travis) Woosley, of Johnston, IA; two sisters, Kay House of Lansdale, PA and Jean Hahn of Muscatine, IA; her adored grandchildren, Bailee Randall, Maddingly Woosley, Ulysses Walter, and Marinna Woosley. Kim will also be missed by many lifelong friends. She is preceded in death by her parents and her husband, Tom.

Her family would like to extend our deepest gratitude to her care team at Edencrest and Care Initiatives Hospice for their dignified care.

In celebration of Kim's love of reading, please donate a book of your choice in her memory.
