Theresa Elizabeth Laratta Hager, 86, passed away peacefully at 6:30 a.m. on March 5, 2017 at Taylor Hospice House. A Mass of Christian Burial celebrating Theresa’s life will be held at 11 a.m. on Thursday, March 9, 2017 at Christ the King, 5711 SW 9th Street followed by burial at Resthaven Cemetery. Visitation will be held from 5 to 7:30 p.m. with a Vigil Service at 6:30 p.m. Wednesday, March 8th at Hamilton’s Southtown Funeral Home, 5400 SW 9th Street.
Theresa was one of eight children born to Giuseppe and Rosina Laratta on August 15, 1930 in Hannibal, Missouri. She graduated from Monroe City High School in 1949. She was united in marriage to Lloyd Hager in 1953 and they made their home in south Des Moines. They were both loyal members of Christ the King Catholic Church where she was also a member of the Altar and Rosary Society.
Theresa loved baking homemade bread, Italian cookies and pasta sauce. She loved cooking for her large family and could whip up a wonderful home cooked meal in no time. Her door was always open to anyone who needed something. She was a kind and gentle soul with a heart and smile as big as Texas.
Theresa is survived by her two children, Terri Doll and Jim (Judy) Hager; three grandchildren, Chris, Michael and Elizabeth; and a host of nieces and nephews.
She was preceded in death by her parents; husband, Lloyd; brothers, Frank, Jim and Joe; sisters, Vicky Laratta, Virginia Kamphaus, Raffy Thomas and Mary Voce; and son-in-law, Doug Doll.
The family would like to express their thanks to DaVita East Dialysis Center and Dr. Kurt Smith from Iowa Ortho for managing her pain and making her life more livable.
Memorial contributions may be directed to Unity Point Hospice.

I'm so sorry to hear of Theresa's passing. We were next door neighbors on Diehl until I was 3 years old and even now I remember how kind she was to me, always welcoming and she always had a cookie for me. :-) Whenever she talked to my dad, she asked about me, which was so sweet of her. I have only good memories of her. You all have my sympathies, she will be greatly missed by so many whose lives she touched.

Terri and Jim -- Your mother was such a special and wonderful person. Opening up her home to us so many times while we were next door neighbors. So many great memories. Coffee and deserts always. Family was always a focal point of our visits. Praying for you and the family at this trying time.

Terri and Jim--Your mom was one of the few people that always cared about us kids growing up. It was always a delight and joy to run into her occasionally. I am very sad to see of her passing, but she was an angel on earth as she is now in heaven! My thought are with you, as she will be missed.
