Thomas Isenhower, 70, passed away March 3, 2017, at Mercy Hospital.
Born March 10, 1946 in Clearwater, Florida, Tom grew up in Waterloo, Iowa with his parents and siblings. During his childhood he loved living on the Cedar River and was a self-proclaimed ‘river rat.’ He loved the outdoors and he especially loved being on the river. He was involved in high school wrestling and scouting. He graduated from Waterloo West High School in 1964. He was especially proud of earning his Eagle Scout.
After high school, Tom attended the State Teacher’s College of Iowa (now UNI). He enlisted in the Air Force in 1968. After leaving the service, he moved to Houston, Texas to work for the Federal Aviation Adm and earned his pilot’s license. He met Mary Olsen in 1971 and they married June 10, 1972. They had two children while living in Oklahoma City and attended the University of Oklahoma. They moved to Iowa in 1975 following the death of his father. Tom was an avid fisherman and shared his love of the outdoors with his children.
Tom was preceded in death by his parents Verne L. Isenhower and Alice Rose Isenhower and his brother Richard Hunger. He is survived by his adoring wife of 45 years, Mary; his children Jeffry Allen, and Jennifer Lynn Isenhower; his grandchildren Zachary Thomas Bright and Sunshine Eve Mayfield; his sister Carole (Bill); and many loving nieces and nephews.
The family will greet friends from 5 to 7 p.m., Thursday, March 9th, 2017 at Hamilton’s Southtown Funeral Home, 5400 SW 9th Street. A memorial service will be held at 11 a.m., Friday March 10th at St. John’s Lutheran Church, 600 6th Avenue. Thomas will be laid to rest at the Iowa Veteran’s Cemetery in Van Meter.
Memorial contributions may be directed to St. John’s Bless this House Fund, Boy Scout Troop #40, or the Animal Rescue League of Iowa in loving memory of Thomas.
