Elfriede Wormer, 89, died Monday, December 3, 2007 at Trinity Center Luther Park of dementia and natural causes.
Elfriede was born January 18, 1918 in Elbing, East Prussia to Gustav and Frieda Klaffke. The family resided in Elbing until World War II when they were forced to flee by the invading Russian Army. They ultimately settled in Munich, Germany, where Elfriede worked as a translator for the U.S. Army occupation troops. It was in this capacity that she met her husband-to-be, Fred Wormer, of Yale, Iowa.
On January 18, 1947, Elfriede and Fred were married in Johnston, Iowa. In 1949, Elfriede completed the requirements and became a U.S. citizen. Although she worked at several jobs, Elfriede was first and foremost a homemaker. She loved houseplants, especially African Violets. She loved to cook and sew and had crocheted several beautiful tablecloths and afghans. Elfriede also loved spending her summers at Lost Island Lake and traveling to Oregon to visit her son and family. She enjoyed listening to music and having coffee with her friends. Elfriede was admired by all for her unwavering optimism and good nature.
Elfriede is survived by daughters, Carol Jean Wormer, and Frieda Goodson, and granddaughter Heather (Jeff) Craigmile, of Des Moines, Iowa. She is also survived by five grandchildren who reside in Portland, Oregon: Erin Wormer, Angie (Tom) Connors, Katrina (Brett) Clevidence, Sara (Bill) Henry, and Nate (Karen) Wormer. Elfriede has 11 great-grandchildren.
Elfriede was preceded in death by her husband, Fred Wormer; son, Dwight Wormer; brother, Horst Klaffke, sister, Edith Marsaille, and her parents.
Funeral services will be held at 2:30 p.m. Saturday at Hamilton’s Funeral Home with burial at Glendale Cemetery. Visitation will be from 12 to 2:30 p.m. prior to the service
Memorials may be made to Capitol Hill Lutheran Church.
