Charles Hart
February 26, 2017
Charles Edward Hart passed away peacefully on Sunday, February 26 at Arbor Springs surrounded by his family and several close friends. He was a loving and protective husband, father, stepfather and grandpa.
Services will be held at Covenant Presbyterian Church, 1025 28th Stree, West Des Moines on Saturday, March 4, 2017 at 11:00 a.m. Visitation with the family will be held Friday, March 3, 2017 from 5:00 – 7:00 p.m. at Hamilton’s on Westown Parkway, 3601 Westown Parkway, West Des Moines. Private internment will take place at Resthaven Cemetery at a later date.
Chuck or “Charlie” as he was also referred to by many was born on January 24, 1943 in Centerville, Iowa to Clyde and Icel Hart. Following graduation from Centerville High School he attended Indian Hills Community College and then transferred to Truman State University where he graduated with a degree in Business Administration.
He was employed by The Travelers Insurance Company for 36 years where he retired from in 2002. He also joined the Army Reserves in 1967, and retired in 2003 as a Master Sergeant (E8). He was always very proud of his military service.
Chuck was a guy who truly loved life, his family and his beloved “Hawkeyes”. He had many interests including family vacations, golfing, fishing, tailgating at Kinnick, swimming laps and working out at Prairie Life Fitness Club, playing in a monthly poker group, and of course his regular TGIF group of guys. He and his wife, Deb, also enjoyed family time, their circle of friends and their trips to Vail, Florida and a trip to Yellowstone. Chuck always said “to have friends, you have to BE a friend”—and he was.
He is survived by his loving wife Deb of 25 years; a son, Chris; a daughter, Carey; stepson, Michael Turnure; two granddaughters, Alexandra and Riley; and his sister-in-law, Joyce Hart. He is also survived by many in-laws, nieces and nephews and of course, his loyal little schnauzer, Shadow.
He was preceded in death by his parents; his brother, Vern, who was his hero; and two spunky schnauzers, Heidi and Cotton. What a wonderful reunion they are all having now.
The family is grateful for all the wonderful support he received from the staff at Arbor Springs, many special friends and Hospice of Central Iowa.
If you wish to make a memorial to honor Chuck, he was a strong supporter of the Wounded Warrior Project, the Animal Rescue League of Iowa, and Covenant Presbyterian Church.

Carey and Deb,
I heard about the passing of Chuck and I am sorry for your loss.
I remember Chuck as a colleague and a mentor earlier on in my career. I still remember to this day when he backed me in a difficult business situation. This is something I will never forget and use it as a teaching moment as I mentor others.
Sorry for your loss as a father and a husband and wish you my sincerest condolences.

I grew up with Charlie. He was one grade ahead of me and always one of the nicest, friendliest people I knew. I saw him last on a trip back to Centerville probably seven years ago, and he was the same good guy he was when we were kids. R.I.P. Charlie Hart.

Deb and family - Please know how many wonderful memories Chuck leaves with me and so many others. He taught me a lot about insurance but more important, he was a class act with the utmost integrity and kindness (and never to miss out on a laugh too!). It will be a smaller world without him. My prayers are with you all.
