February 08, 2017
The blessed mother Mary led David Stephen Mount to his heavenly home on Wednesday, February 8, 2017. Visitation will be held from 5:00 – 7:00 p.m. with a Rosary to begin at 7:00 p.m. on Sunday, February 12, 2017, at Hamilton’s near Highland Memory Gardens, 121 NW 60th Avenue. Mass of Christian Burial will be held on Monday at 9:30 a.m. at All Saints Catholic Church, 650 NE 52nd Avenue. Interment will take place at Iowa Veterans Cemetery at 12:30 p.m.
Dave “Butchie” Mount received his first gift of life on April 27, 1944, in Des Moines, IA to Jack and Mildred Mount (McMenamin). He was part of the 1962 graduating class at Dowling High School, where he played football, basketball, and baseball. In 1995, he was inducted into Dowling’s hall of fame in recognition of all three sports.
He enrolled at Drake University from 1962-64, where he continued his athletic endeavors. After his time in academia, Dave Mount joined the United States Army where he was stationed in Germany from 1966-68 during the Vietnam War.
He was a gas serviceman for MidAmerican Energy for 28 years where he met his beloved wife, Sue. They then moved to Holiday Island, AR where he spent his retirement golfing and was an avid member of St. Elizabeth’s Parish in Eureka Springs. As his health declined, they moved to Iowa City to be placed on the heart transplant list at the University of Iowa Hospital. He waited four years before receiving his second gift of life on December 16, 2005, as the 221st heart transplant recipient.
Dave was a lifelong sports fan. He enjoyed bowling, golfing, softball, and even when he was bed ridden in the hospital, his competitive nature shined through games of cribbage. Thanks to his mother, he was a lifelong Iowa Hawkeye fan, and thanks to his father, he was a lifelong St. Louis Cardinals fan. Thanks to his wife, he became a reluctant Cubs fan during the 2016 World Series.
Dave was preceded in death by his parents and baby sister, Jean Margaret.
He is survived by his wife, Sue of 25 years; his four children, Shawn (Doug) Drost, Chris (Tory) Mount, Kelly Mount, and Brian Mount; his two stepchildren, Peggy (Kirk) Peterson and Kenny (Julie) Cortum; 14 grandchildren, 5 great-grandchildren with one due in May; his brother, Jim (Susan) Mount; sisters, Nancy (Denny) Thompson, Jan (Tom) Tuel, Mary (Brad) Carey; as well as his many nieces, nephews, extended family, friends, and clergy.
Dave would like to thank the various doctors, nurses, and medical staff for all of their kindness and caring over the years.
Memorial contributions will be received by the family and later directed to various organizations. Giving the gift of life by signing up as an organ donor is another way you can honor Dave.

So sorry for your loss. I worked with Dave at Iowa Power & Light, aka Mid American Energy, in the Gas Meter Shop. We always had fun with the bantering back and forth about Dowling and East High schools sports teams. There were many other employees from those schools besides us so it added to the Monday after the weekend water cooler talk. Although it has been quite a few years since Dave retired I'll always remember our out of town trips, coffee break stops where we would meet some of Dave's relatives in the small towns on the square. Those towns were west and when we went east it was my turn to meet my relatives the same way. Ironically our roots were not that much different. And when we would return to the shop at night there was always a few minutes for a pinnacle game. Remember the past and cherish your memories, I will of Dave.

Davey, Jimmy, I and the other neighborhood kids would play on the old Riley schoolgrounds. No matter what sport we played--he always won! Prayers to the family. RIP.
