Richard Henry Mau

Richard Henry Mau was born May 17, 1938, in Fairmont, Minnesota, to Henry Louis Mau and Gertrude Edna (Schwanz) Mau. Richard loved old cars and took pleasure in driving his Cadillac just for the joy of driving. He owned an auto repair shop in Chicago, Illinois for many years of his life. Even after moving to Des Moines, Iowa, Richard continued to enjoy playing the accordion and had recently learned to play the guitar. Richard loved singing in the choir, listening to Polka music, and oil painting. He took immense pride in watching his children play sports. Above all else, Richard’s greatest joy in his life was his family.

Richard passed away peacefully in Des Moines, Iowa, on Monday, February 6, 2017, at the age of 78.

Richard is lovingly remembered by his children, Cheryl Salta, Nathan Mau and Laura (Mark) Mears; his grandchildren, Kim, Shelly, Colton, Jaxson and Michael; brothers, Roger (Maggie) Mau and David (Gayle) Mau and sister, Joanne Boelter; daughter-in-law, Doris Rivera; and many other extended family and friends.

Richard was preceded in death by his parents, Henry and Gertrude Mau; son, Douglas Mau; brother, Kenneth Mau; and niece, Lisa Mau.

A memorial service will be held for Richard at Lakeside Cemetery in Fairmont, Minnesota in the spring.

In lieu of flowers, memorials may be directed to Laura Mears (daughter) or Nathan Mau (son).
