Joann Jefferson, age 85, passed away peacefully on February 3, 2017 at Valley View Village in Des Moines. She was born in Fort Madison, IA on October 3, 1931, the daughter of Grover and Marie Hughes.

Joann was a member of Capitol Hill Christian Church and enjoyed volunteering at Adams Elementary School where she made many friendships. In her spare-time, she loved listening to Garth Brooks and watching NASCAR, Jeff Gordon being her personal favorite. Most importantly, Joann treasured traveling with her family, and creating memories that would last a lifetime. She always put her family first and made sure everyone felt loved, she will be immensely missed by all who knew and loved her.

Those left to cherish her memory include her loving husband of 66 years, Jeff; children, Kathy Jefferson, Karen Jefferson, Steve (Linda) Jefferson, and Janie (Jeff) Jones; grandchildren, Joshua (Rachel), Michael (Christina Pipes), Courtney (Nathan), and Kara (Brian); great-grandchildren, Aiden and Juniper; and many nieces, nephews and extended family.

Joann was preceded in death by her parents; four sisters; and one brother.

Visitation will be held from 12 to 1 p.m., with funeral service to begin at 1 p.m., Wednesday, February 8, 2017 at Hamilton’s Funeral Home, 605 Lyon Street, Des Moines. Entombment will follow at Masonic Cemetery in Des Moines.

Memorial Contributions may be directed to either Shriners Children's Hospital or Jeff Gordon Children’s Foundation in memory of Joann.
