Virgil Lee Sackett passed away on Thursday, February 2, 2017, at Valley View Village in Des Moines, Iowa. He was born October 17, 1927 in Zion, Iowa, to Howard and Gretchen (Ward) Sackett. Virgil was raised on a turkey farm in Adair County, Iowa, and attended Menlo schools. In 1945, he met Louise Clayton and they were married in 1952 while Virgil was stationed at Fort Benning, Georgia. While there, they welcomed their first daughter, Jeanne, in 1953. After being discharged from the service, the couple moved back to southwest Iowa where they lived in several towns. They had two additional daughters, Marilyn in 1954 and Susan in 1957.

Virgil was a truck driver for Schelbergs, and in 1962, they moved to Des Moines where he was a Mechanic at Hiland Potato Chip. The family later moved to Pleasant Hill, Iowa, where Virgil worked for the city and was the first person to retire from the City of Pleasant Hill.

Virgil and Louise enjoyed camping, vacationing, wintering in Texas, and dancing. In 2003, Virgil became a member of Hope Lutheran Church in Des Moines.

He is survived by his wife, Louise; daughters, Jeanne Sackett (Bondurant), Susan and Laural Brown (Des Moines); 7 grandchildren: Charles Breuklander, Christopher Breuklander, Stacy Kadner-Johnston, Tammra Swartwood, Matthew Mascaro, Angela Mascaro, and Andrea Greer; 3 step grandchildren, Travis, Nathan, and Rhi Brown; 14 great grandchildren; sisters, Luene Westrum (Colorado) and Laree Berry (Creston); as well as many nieces, nephews, and cousins. He was preceded in death by his father, Howard Sackett; mother, Gretchen (Ward) Evatt; daughter, Marilyn Sackett Hills; son-in-law, Ernie Hills; brother, Jay Sackett; many sisters, Margaret Strong, Wanda Hild, Joanne Sackett, Karen Pugh, Vesper Sackett, Shirley Fulton, Lorraine Fry, and Virginia Austin.

Visitation will be held from 5:00 – 7:00 p.m., Monday, February 6, 2017, at Hamilton’s near Highland Memory Gardens, 121 NW 60th Avenue in Des Moines. Funeral services will be Tuesday at 10:30 a.m. at Hope Lutheran Church, 3857 E. 42nd Street in Des Moines with burial to follow at Oakwood Cemetery in Pleasant Hill.
