Norm was born on June 28, 1931 in Tallmadge Township, MI to Leslie and Dorothy Barnes. He was the oldest of four children. Norm was a Korean War Veteran serving in the United States Navy on the USS Waldron and while enlisted was a member of the Drum and Bugle Corps. Norm was awarded membership to the Tin Can Sailors of The National Association of Destroyer Veterans, which recognizes the dedication and commitment to preserving Americas beloved Historic Fleet. He was proud to have served his country and during his later years was honored to have flown on an Honor Flight to Washington D.C.

He moved to Des Moines in 1959 and shortly after began working for AE Dairy. After retiring Norm became self-employed. He loved working and tinkering on machinery of all kinds. He was an avid hunter and fisherman, and could tell you stories of every hunting or boating adventure. He loved gardening and shared his harvest with many. Norm recently took up kayaking at his winter home in Florida, where he would explore the inlets and bay for the best fishing. He was a member of the choir at his church in Florida, and loved singing there. He was a member of Grace Church here in Des Moines, and enjoyed spending time with his small group. His warm smile will be missed by all who had the pleasure of knowing him. Norman loved the Lord and lived it.

He was preceded in death by his brother, Joseph. Norm is survived by his wife, Carole; and her two children, Bret (Pam) Cook and Shelby (Alan) Anderson; his sisters, Rosalie (Al) George and Nancy McPheeters; many nieces and nephews; and his nephew, Ben who held a special place in his heart.
