Matthew Robert Henry
January 29, 2017
Our beloved only child, Matthew (Matt) Robert Henry’s earthly journey ended when God called upon Matt to join Him in Heaven on January 29, 2017 at the age of 31. What parents are ever prepared for the loss of a child? We recognize that Matt is now here with us in a new way to guide his family and friends on our earthly journey until we are joined with him in God’s Kingdom.
Matt was born on June 11, 1985 in Farmington, New Mexico. He was always full of energy and we loved our travels to the desert, riding in his first hot air balloon in the Colorado Rockies and his favorite, Disneyland in California. As a family, we moved back to our birth state of Iowa so that Matt could be raised around his extended family. He attended St. Augustin Elementary School, Merrill Middle School, and Roosevelt High School in Des Moines, IA, graduating in 2003. During high school, Matt excelled in Japanese which culminated with a student trip to Japan. He was also the Rifle Team Commander in his senior year with the Junior Marine Corps ROTC, where he earned the Distinguished Expert Rifleman award and was a member of the Knights MROTC Drill Team. Matt’s Dad loved the many trips he made around the country with him and his fellow cadets.
Matt graduated from Des Moines Area Community College in 2009 with an Associate Degree in Applied Sciences. From there he joined Firestone Service Center in Des Moines. He followed this path to his current career with Wells Fargo Bank in West Des Moines and was promoted to the Department of Loss Mitigation. He was a creatively good cook and enjoyed grilling out with family and friends. His other true passion was flying drones with his Dad and his drone flying buddies.
We didn’t fully comprehend the many friends who expressed so much love for him on Facebook, his social media connection. We know that he was bigger than life, filled a room with much humor and expressed genuine care for everyone with whom he came in contact. Wells Fargo was home to Matt and he reached out to all of his work family there who constantly embraced him. People always described him as a great and true friend.
Matt is survived by his parents, Ann and Steve Henry, his Uncles and Aunts, Mike and Nedra Henry, Janice Henry, Patrick and Judith Henry, Mark and Lori Henry, Tim Henry, and Dan and Marquetta Kinnamon. He is also survived by many, many cousins who all found him to be a genuinely lovable man.
His funeral will be held at St. Francis of Assisi Church, 7075 Ashworth Road, West Des Moines, IA on Monday, February 6, 2017 with visitation from 11:30 am to 12:30 pm followed by a Mass of Christian Burial at 12:45 pm. There will not be an internment after the service since Matt’s cremains will remain with his family.
Memorial contributions can be made to: Roosevelt High School, 4419 Center Street, Des Moines, IA 50312, in the name of: Matt Henry, 2003 Graduate, or St. Francis of Assisi Parish School, 7075 Ashworth Road, West Des Moines, IA 50266, in the name of: Matt Henry. Matt was without a doubt one of the best friends I've ever had. Some of the fondest memories I have in life are the crisp fall afternoons we spent playing frisbee golf and talking about nothing in particular. We lost touch after I moved out of Iowa and that is something that I will always regret. Even despite this distance it's amazing how often he popped into my thoughts, every time resulting in a smile and a fond memory. I will miss him greatly, but I will always hold on to those times I had the honor of sharing with Matt. My deepest condolences to you.

Steve and Ann-
Matt was one of my closest friends. We met working at Wells Fargo and he always brought a smile to my face. We had a lot of good times and laughs at work and he always had a smile on his face. Matt was always there for me whenever I needed him. He was always just a text or phone call away. Matt made such a difference in my life, and I would not be where I am right now without him. I am so grateful I had the chance to know your son. He will always remain a part in all of our hearts. My thoughts and prayers go out to the entire family.

Steve and Ann -
Emily and I were greatly saddened to hear of Matt's passing. He was one of my best friends in high school and the first of my friends to meet Emily. I appreciate your hospitality for all the times I spent hanging out with Matt in the basement. We had a lot of fun playing co-op Halo and Diablo II together, enjoying the snacks that Ann prepared for us, and going to the Y together to play racquetball. I did not see him as often as I would have liked after high school, but every time we got together, Emily and I really enjoyed catching up with him. He had a wonderful, larger-than-life personality, and we will miss him immensely. You will be in our thoughts and prayers.

Dear Steve & Ann:
I was so saddened to read Matt's obituary in the Register. As Matt's Principal at Theodore Roosevelt for his freshman and sophomore years, I always enjoyed visiting with Matt, his keen sense of humor, and his always cheerful attitude. I was so proud of him and his commitment to the Marine ROTC Rifle Team, and especially in his role as Team Commander in his senior year. Matt was always surrounded by friends worthy of his company and always had a smile for me whenever we met. I know that you will both miss him greatly but I am confident that Matt is now in heaven smiling down upon us all. Our thoughts and prayers will be with you both in the days that lie ahead.

Ann and Steve-Words cannot express the hole in our lives left by Matt's passing. He was a fantastic man and a great joker. There was never a dull moment when he was around. Steve, it was always a pleasure having you chaperone our drill/rifle trips. Matt and I's antics in/out of ROTC made for some very fond memories. Wither we were hanging out at my house or I was over at yours, Matt and I always had a blast. This world is certainly darker with him not with us anymore. I know Matt will keep the party hopping until we meet up again.
With deepest condolences,
James

Steve and Ann- It has been nearly 20 years since you guys showed up as customers at our little gun shop and 15 since Matt came to work with us. I think he taught us a lot more about life than he ever learned from us. Which was probably a good thing. He was a fun kid to have around and I will miss him. He was worth remembering. I don't have any words that will offer you any peace. I suppose only God and time can do that. I do have a Matt story which I hope brings a smile.... One of the funniest times was when he brought in his air soft guns to the shop which we promptly turned against him! I remember fondly chasing him around the shop with his own gun and all he had for defense was a shield made out of a plastic bed pan. Priceless. I'll be there Monday to say goodbye to our little buddy.
