Norma Baie

Service Details

Norma Baie was born December 17, 1932, to Clyde and Mabel (Morrison) Keagle in Collins, Iowa. She was the youngest and only daughter. She graduated from Collins High School in 1951. She died of complications of Parkinson’s disease on January 28, 2017.

After graduation, she moved to Des Moines living in the former Esther Hall residence for young women. She worked at The Banker’s Life (now Principal.) She met her husband, Leland Baie from Rhodes, Iowa, on a blind date through a mutual friend. They married in 1959. She was a long time member of St. Peter’s Catholic Church. They settled on the East Side of Des Moines. They had great neighbors and friends. Norma and some of the neighborhood ladies played in a card group together for over 40 years until aging made it difficult for some to continue. They would still get together occasionally for lunch. Norma and Lee enjoyed going out to eat, especially going to Drake Diner and being served by their favorite waitress, Mary.

Norma, as did most of the ladies in the neighborhood, stayed home to raise their children returning to work when the children got older. She spent many years at Butler Paper Company before retiring in 1994. Norma and Lee enjoyed over 20 years of retirement together. They would take short trips occasionally, but were content to be home where they were close to their children, grandchildren, and multiple dogs they had over the years. She enjoyed spending time with family and friends, and seldom missed an event by their children or grandchildren.

Norma is survived by her husband, Leland, daughters Lisa Fitzpatrick (Raymond) and Joleen Ellenwood (Brad Harrison), grandchildren Emily Ellenwood (James Wells), Evan Ellenwood, Michael Fitzpatrick and Sarah Juhl (Matthew Juhl), great grandchildren Ivy and Kal Wells, nieces and nephews Connie Westphal (Tim) and Gary Banzhaf (Cindy), great nieces and nephew Cheri, Autumn, Heidi, Cooper and Ruby, all of Marshalltown, and dear lifelong friends Andy (Carroll) and Eileen Anderson and their sons Jack and Jason. She was preceded in death by her parents, brothers Bob (Robert) who died in a Navy plane crash in 1945 and Dick (Stanley), granddaughter Katherine Ann Fitzpatrick, and her sister in law Irene Banzhaf.

Visitation will be held from 4 to 7 pm, Wednesday, February 1, 2017 at Hamilton’s Funeral Home, 605 Lyon St, Des Moines.
