Service Details

Howard A. Sohn, Jr. passed away at the age of 87 on Sunday, January 22, 2017 in Des Moines, Iowa after a short illness.

Howard was born in Quincy, Illinois on October 13, 1929 and was raised in Harlan, Iowa. He was a popular president of his high school class and a feisty 150 pound center.

Howard attended the University of Iowa where his life-long frustration with the Hawkeyes began, and much fun was found at the Delta Upsilon Fraternity. Following college, he served as 1st LT in the Korean War. Upon his return he married his college sweetheart Jo Cooper and moved to Marion, Iowa where they began their family. In 1974 they moved to Des Moines.

Howard was dearly devoted to family, and was a very active grandpa of eight. He’ll be remembered for his good natured teasing, and beautifully written notes to family and friends. In retirement, they enjoyed their winter home in The Villages, Florida, as well as traveling the world with the Des Moines Friendship Force.

Howard retired as Vice President of Marketing at Continental Western Insurance Company. He served as President of the Linn-Mar school board, Chairperson of Covenant Christian Church, and President of the local CPCU Insurance chapter.

He was preceded in death by his wife of 62 years, Jo; parents, Helen and Howard Sr.; and sister, Charlene. Howard is survived by his brother, Charles; children, Steven (Cindy) Sohn, Jay (Julie) Sohn, and Julie (Cass) Igram; and grandchildren, Adam Sohn, Abby Sohn, Emily (Matt) Rebelskey, Alex Igram, Andy (Laura) Sohn, Sarah Igram, Kristin Sohn, and Taylor Igram.

A visitation will be held on Saturday, January 28, 2017 at 10:00 am, followed by an 11:00 am service at Hamilton’s on Westown Parkway, 3601 Westown Parkway in West Des Moines. Howard’s cremated remains will be laid to rest in a private ceremony at Iowa Veterans Cemetery in Adel, Iowa.

Memorials may be made to the Alzheimer’s Association of Greater Iowa (in memory of wife, Jo) or Covenant Christian Church. Condolences may be expressed at www.HamiltonsFuneralHome.com.
