Karl Wesley Whitehurst, 24, died on January 18, 2017 at Mercy Medical Center in Des Moines. He was born September 19, 1992 and was raised in Ankeny by his mother, Angela Whitehurst.
Karl graduated from Ankeny High School in 2011 and was currently a roofer for Albright Roofing. Though Karl had his personal struggles, his faith in the Lord Jesus was his comfort and will carry him home. He was a kind, generous, loving, caring young man who had a wonderful sense of humor and a God given gift to write and express his feelings through his poetry and writings. He was an inspiration to those who knew him and will be missed by many.
Karl is survived by his mother, Angela; grandparents, Lynn (Jeff) Brown and Jay Boisdrenghien; aunt, Leigh (Jay) Schiller; sister, Alissa Schroeder; girlfriend, Amanda Simmons, aunts, uncles, cousins and many other loving family and friends.
He was preceded in death by his great grandparents, Harry Alexander, Arnold and Wilhelma Boisdrenghien; uncle, Doug Boisdrenghien and grandfather, Kenneth Whitehurst.
The family will be at the funeral home at 1:00 for guests who want to visit before the memorial service which will be held at 2 p.m. Saturday, January 28, 2017 at Hamilton’s near Highland Memory Gardens, 121 NW 60th Ave. in Des Moines. A Celebration of Life will follow at Good Times, 1912 SW 3rd St., Ankeny, Iowa from 4:30-6:30. Per his written request, Karl’s body has been cremated and he will be set free like he always wanted. He will be forever in our hearts.
Memorial contributions may be directed to Angie Whitehurst in loving memory of Karl.

Karl -- I'm glad I had the opportunity to meet you and see your genuine happiness. You had such a way with words and I got to see a side of you perhaps many didn't get to see. Dear Karl we love you so much. No words can adequately express how much we will miss you. We will carry you always in our hearts. You are gone from earth but youll never be forgotten. We know you had a heart for the Lord in the poems you wrote and songs you listened to. Your struggles are over and we know you are safe with the Lord. We will all be together in heaven. Karl, we miss and love you so much and you will forever be with us. The battle has been won! You are free from the demons that kept you captive for so long.... The comfort we have is knowing the love and faith you had for Jesus and that you are now by his side. This is not goodbye, we'll see you again!! You'll always be our little Karl!!!
