Kathleen Ann Avey
January 16, 2017
Kathleen Ann Avey (formerly Ferguson) was born June 4, 1965 to Wilmetta and Harold McLellan, Jr. in Cedar Rapids, IA. With her two children by her side, she went to be with Jesus on January 16, 2017 after a battle with ovarian cancer.
Services will be held Sunday, January 22, 2017 at Hamilton’s on Westown Parkway, 3601 Westown Pkwy, West Des Moines. Visitation will begin at 12:00 p.m. followed by funeral services at 2:00 p.m.
Kathy worked hard all of her life at anything she did. She loved to sing, and was known for it by patrons of her restaurant, the KC Café, in Casey, Iowa and Casey’s General Store in Adair, IA. Kathy was a joy to be around, bringing light to all who knew her with her bubbly personality, honesty, and sense of humor. She loved lending a helping hand to anyone; her motto was to do “one good deed per day.” She put her faith in Jesus Christ as the only way to heaven, and admitted her shortcomings.
She was devoted to her two children, Summer and Justice Ferguson, and loved her three sisters, Lori Jo Otto (Urbandale), Sandra Mellott (Houston), and Sherri McLellan (Des Moines).
She was taken from this life far too young, at the age of 51, and everyone will miss her terribly. “When you die, it does not mean you lose to cancer. You beat cancer by how you live, why you live, and in the manner in which you live.” – Stuart Scott, ESPN Anchor.
In lieu of flowers, please direct any gifts to her daughter, Summer Ferguson.

Although I barely knew Kathy, I was blessed to be introduced to her through her sister, LoriJo. I was aquainted with her just enough to know that she was a bubbly,fun and loving person. She still is, not here, but now in Heaven. I am sure that she is in Heaven, in the presence of our Lord and Saviour in a way that she has never been before, which makes me be just little jealous- for Kathy is now in a perfect, most beautiful place that God created for His children. I am sorry that I did not know her well, but I can say that she will be greatly missed here by so many that her life and heart touched. She will not be forgotten, I am sure that I will be able to get to know her, one day when we meet again in Heaven. Til then, I do want LoriJo to know that I will be praying for her and her family at this time. Thank you, LoriJo for introducing me to your sister! May God bless you and keep you ever so close to Him at this time. Love,Michelle Farrell

After They Are Gone.........
When someone we love passes away,
We ache, but we go on;
Our dear departed would want us to heal,
After they are gone.
Grief is a normal way to mend
The anguish and pain in our hearts;
We need time to remember and time to mourn,
Before the recovery starts.
Let's draw together to recuperate,
As we go through this period of sorrow;
Let's help each other, with tender care
To find a brighter tomorrow.
