Melvin "Mel" Moore

Mel Moore
Des Moines
It is with great sadness to report the passing of Melvin Moore. Born in Cainesville, Missouri to Wilma and Gus Moore, whom have preceded him in death, and who will finally be united with his mother who died tragically in 1946. Mel has two surviving brothers Max and Gus "Duane."
Married for 24 years to Sharon Moore, he has six sons five of which live in Des Moines - Bob, Bryan (Hattie), Brad (Lisa), Bill (Celesta), Biff (Jenny), and Brent (Patty) lives in Houston, Texas.
Mel has 16 grandchildren and 5 great-grandchildren. He served in the US Navy from 1961-1962. He spent most of his life in the Des Moines area; worked as a machinist in Houston Texas. His most notable achievement was having machined various parts for the Apollo Space Program. He also was very proud that he built the flag pole used for the Apollo 11 lunar landing.
Mel was employed by the Chicago and North Western Railroad and the Union Pacific Railroad as a locomotive engineer from 1970 until 1999.
He was a passionate man about his many hobbies, which included: running, tennis, boating, a unique "railroad art" collection and painting. His greatest passion was riding Harley Davidson motorcycles.
He could usually be overheard with an off-the-wall comment, using his banter to get a laugh out anyone within hearing distance.
He lived life at full throttle until his illnesses slowed him down later in life.
He will be greatly missed...

I was so sad to hear about Uncle Melvin. I will never forget the Thanksgiving when his family drove to Detroit and then got snowed in! Us kids had a great time! I'm thinking about you all and remembering those fun times we were together.

So sorry to hear about "Uncle Mel"! I knew of Mel long before I really met him, like, I did know he had a 650 Triumph motorcycle which Nancy rode to church on wednesday nights once in awhile. Sharon and Mel lived in Houston when Nancy and I got married and then when I came home from Vietnam we went to Houston for a couple of weeks. That's where he became "Uncle Mel" which would become my greeting to him from that time on, as we were teaching Larry Keith what to call his uncle. Mel worked for Gleico Machine Works as a machinist. (I still have a screwdriver with multiple heads he made for me). We talked late into the night after he would get home, about anything and everything. I was always impressed about how much he read up on things not only back then but as has been said he always had a story to tell and not always fictional. When Mel and Sharon brought their family back to Iowa we got more acquainted, like learning of his relationship with the Barkers and Masel and Twila and even a foster brother or two including Jim Parish for one. And as times have passed our families have grown and the memories have continued to grow as well. Remember the past and cherish those memories.

It is so difficult to be separated from our loved ones. Our hope is in the resurrection and reunion. Until then we have the love of Jesus and our family and friends and our memories to comfort us. I lost my father at 16, know that I will be praying for comfort for all you boys. Sharon 25 years is a lot of life and love isn't it. I'm here for you any time. We look forward to Rev 21:4 don't we !
