Have you ever looked into a mirror and seen who you will be when you are 20 years older? This happened to me the first time I met 'Leroy' in Des Moines, Iowa in 1988. Verne was not a complicated man, yet he could handle a complicated situation like a surgeon, yea there may be blood splattered every where, but you know he had the touch, and could make whatever tool was in his hand sing, making beautiful music. I am Blessed to see the work of a masters hand when I go to the hundreds of jobs Verne has been on. His coil work is unmatched, period. EVERY customer who ever came in contact with this talented man asks about him, Friday, I broke down and cried when the question came from Mrs. Whittry (1993)....How's Leroy?
Loyal to a fault.
His common-law-wife Dixie loved and saved this man,as he was saving her. This was one tough couple!! The thing I remember most, was how much time, especially in the early days in California, they would spend together, other than work it was home to Dixie. Cancer is a bitch, that's for sure. Leroy never hid from it, did the best he could and forgave everyone who ever doubted his intentions. I miss Leroy, I love Leroy and after his stroke I loved seeing his eyes come to life when we would talk about our glory days. I am proud to be known to all as 'an educated idiot' because this man took my book knowledge, taught me what's important in life and work, and today I am the splitting image of the man I first met at 405 45th street when he came to rescue a siding job run amuck.
