Lyle K. Johnson, 94, entered eternal life on October 12, 2016 at the VA Medical Center.

Lyle was born on October 6, 1922 to Arthur and Amanda Johnson in Lucas County, Iowa. He married his loving wife, Bernadine of 72 years on November 29, 1941. He then moved to Des Moines and soon after entered military service in January of 1942. He trained at Camp Hood, Texas and Camp Polk, Louisiana.

He proudly served in the 32nd Red Arrow Infantry Division until December of 1946. He and his comrades fought for our country enduring the most direct combat hours of any division in World War II—over 13,000 hours, serving on the islands of Luzon, Leyte in the Philippines and eventually Japan itself after the bombings.

After the war, Lyle sucessfully farmed in Lucas County and worked in the oil business where he owned and operated a Standard Oil Station on 42nd and University and later a Conoco station on 22nd and Forest in Des Moines. He was a champion tractor puller with his favorite tractor, “Old Chromey”.

He was a member of the Capital Lodge, Des Moines Scottish Rites, Shriners, Consistency and V.F.W.

He was preceded in eternal rest by his beloved wife, Bernadine, his parents, Arthur and Amanda Johnson, siblings, Virgil, Verle, Victor, Raymond, Jenave, Martha and Clarence along with so many others to welcome him home.

Lyle is survived by 3 children, Lyle Johnson Jr. (Connie) of Urbandale, Trudy Johnson of Urbandale and Deborah Kearney of Grimes, 8 grandchildren, Emily Clayton, Amanda Holdmeyer (Eric), Abby Gottner, Keith Johnson (Jacqueline), Molly Johnson and Carrie Kearney, Kevin Kearney (Brittany) and Joseph Kearney. Lyle is also survived by 6 great grandchildren, Keegan, Shay, Dain, Zaida, Graham and Gabriella, his brother, Charles Johnson of Chariton, his sister, Betty Burgett of Chariton and many nieces and nephews.

Lyle will be greatly missed by so many friends and family. He will be remembered for his love of life, laughter and people.

Celebration of Lyle's life to be held on Monday, October 17, 2016 at Hamilton's Funeral Home, 605 Lyon Street, Des Moines, Iowa at 1:00 pm with visitation one hour prior to the service. Burial at Sunny Hill Cemetery in Grimes, Iowa.
