October 09, 2016
Ronald Stewart, 76, passed away on October 9, 2016. He was born in Des Moines, Iowa on February 7, 1940, to Merle and Loal Stewart.
Ron humbly served his country with the United States Marine Corps for three years and then continued his service with the Marine Corps Reserve. He was a Polk County Deputy Sheriff for many years until his retirement in 1997. Having been an avid supporter of the Hawkeyes, Ron was proud to have the detail of Director of Football Security for the Iowa Hawkeyes for 32 years, retiring in 2014.
Ron was a devoted husband, father and grandfather who treasured his family and their time spent together. When he wasn’t with his family or cheering on the Hawkeyes, Ron enjoyed a day on the water fishing.
Ron is survived by his wife of 30 years, Cara; children, Amy Stewart Hunt and Don Quijano; grandson, Andrew Hunt; and his siblings, William (Barbara) Stewart and Judith (Larry) Lee. He was preceded in death by his mother and father.
Funeral services will be held at 11:00 a.m. on Friday, October 14, 2016 at Faith Lutheran Church, 10395 University Avenue in Clive. Visitation will be held Thursday evening from 5:00 – 8:00 p.m. at Hamilton’s near Highland Memory Gardens, 121 NW 60th Avenue in Des Moines.

We were the Hawkeye's team liaisons both times they played in the Insight Bowl. Ron was fabulous to work with and we all enjoyed getting to know him. A very good man, and a true Hawkeye. We were sorry to hear of his passing, and wish all of his friends and family God's peace during this difficult time.

My deepest sympathy to you and your family. I played football under Coach Fry from '87-'91. I only knew Ron through the Iowa program, but he was a very nice person and fun to be around. I remember he had a great smile and I can see why Coach Fry had Ron on his security detail. Thanks to Ron for his life long service and may God give you His peace and comfort at this most difficult time. God bless you!

So sorry to hear of Ron's passing. I knew Ron for over 40 years; from the old Ski Hawk days, to a shout out at Hawkeye games, and since moving back to the DSM area four years ago occasionally ran into this old friend. He will be sorely missed.
