Virginia Wedemeyer

Virginia Wedemeyer, 95, passed away on Thursday, October 6, 2016 at Mitchell Village Care Center with her family by her side. She was born October 3, 1921 Seattle, WA to Raymond and Agnes Hawthorne. She was united in marriage to Bernal Wedemeyer in 1940 in Adair, Iowa
Virginia worked as a dental assistant in Winterset, later receiving schooling to teach dental x-ray. She taught dental assistance students at DMACC in Ankeny until her retirement.
Upon retiring, Virginia and Bernal moved to their Pleasant Hill acreage where they enjoyed life gardening, travelling, volunteering at the state fair and camping at Cutty’s where she saved a boy’s life who was struck by lightning. She will be remembered for her warm smile, love for her family, her generous open approach to life and a lifetime of hosting wonderful holiday family gatherings.
Virginia is survived by her children, Colleen (Charlie Howe) Nicholl of Winterset, Nancy (Don) Day of Runnells, Rodney (Dorothy) Wedemeyer of St. Charles, and Patricia Tiernan of Johnstown, CO; 12 grandchildren; 23 great-grandchildren; 3 great-great grandchildren; and brother, Bob Hawthorne of Little Rock, AR.
She was preceded in death by her husband; parents; and sister, Marcia Biggs.
Funeral services will be held at 11:00 AM on Tuesday, October 11, 2016 at First Presbyterian Church, 3100 Easton Blvd. in Des Moines. Visitation will be held from 4:00 – 7:00 PM on Monday, October 10, 2016 at Hamilton’s Altoona Funeral Home, 105 4th Street SW in Altoona. Burial will take place at Winterset Cemetery.
In lieu of flowers, memorials may be directed to First Presbyterian Church or UnityPoint Hospice in loving memory of Virginia.

Our Love, Caring, and HUGS to all of Virginia'a family. I worked with Virginia @ DMACC for many years, she was a dear friend and we had nice visits while she was at Valley View Village. We left on vacation on Oct. 5th and just returned on Mon.
