Karen Jeanne Sellen, 70, passed away peacefully after a courageous battle with leukemia on Wednesday, September 7, 2016.

She will be laid to rest in a private family committal next to her husband of 46 years, Denis Sellen, at Iowa Veteran Cemetery. There will be a memorial service to celebrate Karen’s life at 2:30 Saturday, September 17th at Hamilton’s Funeral Home, 605 Lyon Street, Des Moines.

Karen was born August 30, 1946 in Newark, New York to Robert and Marjorie (Pierce) Edes. She loved her job as an LPN at Wesley Acres, prior to her retirement. She belonged to the Crimson Cuties and the Iowa Wild Roses Redhats. She loved spending time with her dear friends, Ella and Don Dirksen, and her many other friends at the West Des Moines Senior Community Center. She was talented at needlepoint and crafts, but above all, she treasured time spent with her family, especially her grandchildren.

She is survived by her son, Jeremy Sellen; daughter, Meagan (Bob) Evans; and her grandchildren, Malikye, Teagan, Chloe, and Gabriel Evans. She is also survived by her siblings, Bill, Robert Jr., and Barb; sister-in-law, Verna Smith; nephews, Mark (Karla) Smith and Brian (Renee) Smith; and other loving relatives and many special friends.

In addition to her husband, Denis, Karen was preceded in death by her parents, Robert and Marjorie Edes and her son Michael, William Sellen.

In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be directed to the family to assist with medical and funeral expenses.
