He served in the Merchant Marines in WWII from 1942–1944 and was proud to be recognized as a Veteran. His printing career began in 1951, while also running the family farm, until 1956. He then worked as a pressman for the Great Falls Tribune in Great Falls, MT, the Portland Journal in Portland, OR, and the Missoulian in Missoula, MT. After rising to the position of foreman at the Missoulian, he accepted a job as foreman for the printing of the Wall Street Journal in West Des Moines, IA and was instrumental in setting up printing presses in Singapore and Hong Kong. Don was constantly thinking of ways to improve the printing process and used his welding and metalsmith skills to produce many new mechanisms to increase efficiency.

They moved to Bella Vista, AR and spent 10 years enjoying golf, fishing, cards, and many new friends and activities at Bella Vista Lutheran Church. Don and Joann moved back to West Des Moines to enjoy Joann’s family including sister and brother-in-law, June and Sam Rizzuti, brother and sister-in-law, Ed and May Grant; sons, Alan and Russell Ozimek; 3 grandchildren; 7 great-grandchildren; and 1 great-great-grandchild.

He was preceded in death by his daughter, Sharon Lingel-Pate.

Don is remembered for his sense of humor, his ability to win at a friendly game of cards no matter how extreme the odds, his ability to fix anything, and his love of all things mechanical. At Dow Jones he was known as the “Master Craftsman”! Don and Joann had their 31st anniversary coming up on September 21 and spent all of those years always together and were big homebodies. He will be so very missed by all of his family and especially by his beloved wife, Joann.
