Tan Van Vi, 84, passed away peacefully Tuesday, August 30, 2016 at his home in Des Moines.

Visitation will be held from 6:00 to 8:00 p.m., with a 7:00 p.m. Rosary, Friday, September 2, 2016 at Hamilton’s Funeral Home, 605 Lyon Street, Des Moines. Mass of Christian Burial will be 3:00 p.m. Saturday, September 3, 2016 at St. Peter Catholic Church, 612 E 18th St. Des Moines. Burial of cremated remains will take place at Glendale Cemetery 9:00 a.m. Tuesday, September 6, 2016.

Tan was born October 9, 1931 in Dien Bien Phu, Lai Chau, Vietnam, the son of Pan Van Vi and Bun Thi Lo. A major part of his life, Tan served in the Army of the Republic of Vietnam. He graduated from the Vietnamese Academy of Dalat, the “West Point” of South East Asia. His last ranking was Lieutenant Colonel, Chief inspector of Lam Dong province.

He enjoyed many simple things including gardening, playing solitaire, and spent his days bird watching. What he enjoyed the most were his visits from his grandchildren. He was happiest with his grandchildren whether they were just hanging out or there for a special occasion. He loved his grandchildren very much.

Tan is survived by his sons, Quan A. (Manikham) Vi and Tuan A. (Kimoanh Thi Le) Vi; daughters, Hong Nhung T. Vi and Chuongdai T. (Sayphet Baccam) Vi; grandsons, Chris V. Baccam, Alerik C. Vi and Anderson L. Vi; and granddaughters, Annarie V. Baccam and Marika C. Vi.
