John F. Schnoor
August 28, 2016
John Franklin Schnoor, husband, father, golfer, bridge player, good friend, and all around hard-headed know-it-all son of a gun who planned to live forever...didn't. To the shock of all who came to know his boisterous personality, John passed quietly and peacefully Sunday, August 28, 2016 at the age of 81 surrounded by his wife, Jana, and children, Jon and Johanna.
His brand of wit wasn't readily accepted by those who never really wanted to or took the time to get to know him. But for anyone who could muster the patience to get through 5 minutes with him, they would be rewarded by a friendship that willingly offered his last ounce of being for anything they needed.
John was born in Winfield, Kansas in 1935. In 1969 he came to Iowa for one year to teach, but stayed for 47 more. He tortured students and athletes alike as a teacher and coach at East High School, but was ever in support of the Scarlets.
Always on the go, John enjoyed contests of all kinds. If he wasn't watching his children at their athletic pursuits, he could be found on the golf course or at one of the many local high school events in the area. In addition to his enjoyment of athletics, he was a Life Master in Duplicate Bridge and enjoyed traveling to play in national and regional tournaments around the country.
Often disregarding the wishes of his doctors and through, what seemed to his family to be every ailment in the known universe that had steadily taken away his independence, his body kept ticking away. His well-known stubbornness wouldn't let his body give up, until Sunday.
In accordance with his wishes, no services will be held. He was never one for such occasions.

Mr. Schnoor was my golf coach my Senior year. I had never played before. He let me use some of his golf clubs and even took me out with him and Johanna on the weekend. It paid off, I went to state and was All Conference. He was a fantastic golf coach.

I too had a bad experience in Jr high with math, so I was assigned to Mr. Schnoor's class. I vividly remember his crazy ties especially one that was a fish. He was extremely quick witted and that helped keep things light. He allowed pop and snacks in his class.. If you got them from him for $1.00. There were several times he would get his tie stuck in the drawer of his desk.. Rather than open the drawer he would just cut the tie. Memories that have lasted close to 30 years.. So sorry for your loss!

I look back fondly at my time at East High with Mr Schnoor. I had a bad math experience in jr high and was placed in his basic math. After my first semester he told me I was to smart for his class and fast forwarded me to algebra. I admired his dry humor, wit, and ability to put obnoxious teenager in their places but most importantly, that he believed in my success. I am sure it would have been much to his dismay but students just knew that under that rough and gruff exterior was a guy that loved his students and only wished for them to exceed. Very few get to make such an important impact on the lives of teenagers. My thought and prayers are with his family.

Thoughts and prayers to your family. Mr. Schnoor was my golf coach and recruited his son to help teach me to play. I had never touched a club before joining the team, but that didn't bother him. He was such a big supporter of our team and all other sports at East. I loved seeing him in his spirited overalls. We have lost one heck of a guy.

John's obituary fits him to a T! I remember when I was younger, and got the opportunity to come to Iowa and stay for a few days with everyone. John was always picking on myself and Jo, but he was an all around great guy! I am so very sorry to hear of his passing, and will have all of you in my thoughts and prayers. Many hugs, from your Kansas cousin! ~ Leslie
