Jo Ann Schaffer, 84, passed away on August 7th, 2016, at Taylor House-UnityPoint in Des Moines. She was born on June 28th, 1932 to James and Arrah Gilchrist.
Jo Ann was a member of the Mayflower Society. She enjoyed shopping and cooking, and in her younger years, was both a swimmer and diver at East High School. She loved Jumble Puzzles, and watching the shows The Price is Right, Jeopardy and Wheel of Fortune. Jo Ann worked for Dial Finance in data entry, and was married to Leonard “LJ” Schaffer.
Jo Ann is survived by her children, John (Karen) Schaffer of West Des Moines, Tom (Linda) Schaffer of Benton City, Washington, Joseph (Sheilah) Schaffer of Des Moines, Laura (Tim) Newberry of Dallas Center, Patrick (Deb) Schaffer of Prairie City, Susan (Art) Molina of San Diego, California, and Randy (Christy) Schaffer of Mitchellville; twenty-nine grandchildren; twenty-nine greatgrandchildren; one great-great-grandchild; three sisters; and two brothers.
The family will host visitation on Thursday evening from 5:00 pm to 8:00 pm at Hamilton’s near Highland Memory Gardens, located at 121 NW 60th Ave. in Des Moines. A Mass of Christian Burial will be held at 11:00 am on Friday, August 12th, at St Joseph’s Catholic Church, 3300 Easton Blvd, Des Moines, IA 50317, with burial to follow at Oakwood Cemetery.
Memorial contributions may be directed to Taylor House or St. Joseph’s Catholic Church in loving memory of Jo Ann.

The world lost another true earth angel. Jo Ann was such a remarkable woman to so many. Such a wonderful soul..
