Merle “Gene” Cornwell, 81, passed away Saturday, August 6, 2016 at Kavanagh House in Des Moines, Iowa. He was born December 22, 1934 in Corydon, Iowa to Merle and Velma (McKee) Cornwell.

Gene loved to golf, travel, camp, ride motorcycles, and was an avid hunter. But above all he loved his family and enjoyed spending time with them. Gene owned The Garage where he worked side by side with his son, Kevin in auto mechanics and sales.

Gene leaves behind his loving children, Stephen (Sandy) Cornwell, Pam Lewis, Gregory Cornwell, and Kevin (Tami) Cornwell; grandchildren, McKinley, Amanda, RaGina, Tyson, Sam and Sheena; siblings, Bob (Sally) Cornwell and Marlene Miller; and many beloved extended family members and friends.

He was preceded in death by his loving wife, Harriet; his parents; siblings, Wayne (Rube) Cornwell, Gerald Cornwell and Jack Cornwell; and grandson Robert Abrams, Jr.

A memorial visitation will be Sunday, August 14, 2016 from 1 to 3 p.m. at Hamilton’s Funeral Home, 605 Lyon Street, Des Moines.

In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be directed to Kavanagh House on 56th Street.
