Robert Charles “Bob” Ferren, Jr.

Robert Charles “Bob” Ferren, age 69, passed away on Tuesday, July 12, 2016 at Taylor House Hospice in Des Moines, Iowa due to complications of renal cancer. Bob was born in Des Moines on June 17, 1947 to Robert Sr. and Arleen (Murphy) Ferren.

Bob graduated from Des Moines Technical High School, where he studied aviation, played football, and met his future wife, Anita Shull. Bob and Anita were married for more than 48 years and had two children, daughter, Traci and son, Chris. During his life, Bob was the owner/operator of several businesses, including The Keg Tavern in Altoona and Iowa Oil Light. He was affectionately known by his close friends as “The Fonz”. Bob’s passions included, NASCAR, airplanes, and baking. He loved telling jokes, and was a great conversationalist who was full of knowledge about many topics. Above all, he adored his grandkids and was a very proud grandpa.

Those left to cherish his memory include his mother, Arleen Ferren; his loving wife, Anita; daughter, Traci (Scott) Raridon; son, Chris Ferren; grandchildren, Samuel, John, and Kathryn Raridon, and Gabriel and Noah Ferren; step-grandson, Scott (Jena) Raridon, Jr.; step-great-grandchildren, Elijah, Cynthia, and Ariel Raridon; he will also be greatly missed by his loving sister-in-law, Stephanie Shull; brother-in-law, Gary Walker; and many nieces and nephews.

Robert was preceded in death by his father, Robert Charles Ferren, Sr.; brother-in-law, Charles Shull; sister-in-law, Carolyn Walker; and niece, Char’lee Walker.

Visitation will be held from 6 to 8 p.m., Friday, July 15, 2016 at Hamilton’s Altoona Funeral Home, 105 fourth Street SW in Altoona. Funeral service will begin at 10 a.m. Saturday, July 16, 2016, also at the Altoona funeral home followed by burial at Rising Sun Cemetery in Pleasant Hill.

Memorial contributions may be directed to either Alzheimer’s Association, Mesothelioma Applied Research Foundation or MD Anderson Cancer Center.
