Angelo Joseph Castro passed away on the 4th of July, 2016 at Methodist Hospital in Des Moines. Angelo was born on February 2, 1928 in New York, N.Y. to Celestina (LaBarbera) and Joseph A. Castro (Castrogionvanni).

Angelo was raised in Long Island, N.Y. and later moved to Denver, CO. where he resided for 43 years. He moved to Des Moines in September, 2015. He was an engineer for Lockheed Martin for many years, retiring in 1990. During this time in his career he was involved in the Gemini Space Program, the Viking Mission to Mars and won the Presidential NASA Award for his work on the Mars Lander. He married Catherine A. Brennan on June 7th, 1952 in New York. He was a long-time member of Our Lady of Lourdes Church in Denver. He was a Catechist of youth ministry and was instrumental in bible studies at the church.

Angelo is survived by his loving wife of 64 years, Catherine; daughter, Susan (Deacon Larry) Kehoe and son, James (Andrea) CastroLang; four grandchildren; seven great-grandchildren; sister, Marietta and a brother, Joseph; and other loving family and friends. He was preceded in death by his parents.

Mass of Christian Burial will be held at 2:00 p.m. on Saturday, July 9, 2016 at Christ the King Catholic Church, 5711 SW 9th Street, Des Moines. Family will greet friends an hour prior to Mass in the reception hall of the church where a Vigil service will begin at 1:00 p.m. He will be laid to rest on Tuesday, July 12, 2016 at 9:30 a.m. at Iowa Veterans Cemetery in Van Meter, Iowa.
