Gordon Grattan
June 09, 2016
Gordon Eugene Grattan of Bondurant, Iowa passed away on June 9 after battling cancer for nearly a year.
Gordon was the son of the late Leland and Stephanie Grattan of Grinnell, Iowa, and was preceded in death by his brother Albert Grattan of Grinnell. He is survived by his wife Helen Grattan, sons Brian (Robin) Grattan and Howard (Jennifer) Grattan and five grandchildren. He is also survived by his brother Worthin (Maretta) Grattan of Grinnell, Iowa, his sister Julie (T.J.) Colburn of Parkersburg, Iowa, and many nieces and nephews.
Gordon was a 1962 graduate of Grinnell High School and a 1967 graduate of Iowa State University. After graduation, he served his country in the United States Army and was stationed in Korea. He never stopped learning, frequently took continuing education classes and learned to fly an ultralight—a hobby he enjoyed until he was too weak due to chemotherapy treatments. As a mechanical designer he was sent all around the world to work on equipment. After retirement he continued to travel with his wife and all told spent time in 25 countries. He was a man of faith who loved God and His creation. He believed in living responsibly and taking care of the land. On his farm north of Bondurant, he planted thousands of hardwood trees on the portions of land too hilly for crops, knowing full well that the trees would not be harvested until long after his passing.
The family wishes to thank the Bondurant Lions Club, friends, and neighbors who helped around the farm and home this spring. Thanks also to the Des Moines Woodworkers Club for their help in organizing his woodworking equipment. He fully enjoyed being a member of both of these organizations. As a Bondurant Lions Club member, he was awarded the Warren Coleman Honorary Award for his volunteer services to the community and for his work in the prevention of blindness.
A memorial service will be held at 11:30 a.m., Sunday, June 26, at the Des Moines Seventh-day Adventist Church, 2317 Watrous Ave, Des Moines. Memorial contributions may be directed to the Bondurant Lions Club or Des Moines Adventist School in loving memory of Gordon.

Helen, I was so sorry to learn of Gordon's passing. I worked with him at Little Giant several years. He once told me the story of how you met and that joining the tall persons club and finding you was the best decision he ever made. Love like yours is precious.

Dear Helen,
Sandy and I are v. sorry to hear of Gordon's passing. Gordon as you well know was so full of life and so interesting to be around. Everyone on our Turkey Trip so enjoyed him and well remember that he took more pictures by far than anyone. Sandy and I really appreciated the invitation to your home and gardens a few years ago. I could see his love of the land and of all the blessings of that land. I know that you and your sons and grandchildren will have to remain strong since he was taken much too early. Again we are very sorry.
sincerely,
dick and sandy wagner
