Ruby Brown
June 08, 2016
Ruby Marie (Rogers) Brown was born in Des Moines, to William and Mable Vandever on March 17, 1922. She was affectionately known as “Ruby Dube” and “Miss Ruby”. She was the youngest of nine siblings; three brothers and five sisters who preceded her in death.
Ruby graduated from East High School and attended Tennessee State and Drake Universities.
She was a coordinator for the Des Moines Public School System and a social worker for Polk County Social Services. Ruby joined Equitable of Iowa in 1978, working in the Underwriting Department until her retirement.
As a member of Bethel A.M.E. for many decades, she served in the Elizabeth Tolliner Missionary Society. She also enjoyed membership in a community organization, The Circle of Love, and an employee group, the 604 Club.
Ruby took pleasure in interacting with her family; grand children, who kept her “young”, and with many friends. She was a terrific cook! Already there have been respectful family whispers asking, “Who has her dressing recipe?” :)
Her most outstanding gift, however; was being a compassionate listener. A gentle ear to lean on. That gift was a blessing to us, and will be forever treasured.
Ruby departed this life on Tuesday, June 7, 2016 at her home. She is survived by a son, Lee Rogers, daughters, Deborah Mason and Sheryl Rogers. Grandchildren; Euric Wadsworth, Bernard Davis, Cheyenne Pierce, Brandon Pierce, Aisha White, Shawnda Newton, Breon Rogers, Trevor Ashby, and Keinesha Jackson. Great grandchildren; Jahbriah, Euric II, Brandon II, Mason, Kennedy, Calista, Pharaoh, and Deja. Nephew; Frank Barnes Jr. Nieces; Desiree Mitchell, Gwendolyn Kee, Constance Margerum, and many extended family members and dear friends.

Debra, although I did not know your mom physically, by knowing you as her daughter, it's enough to speak of. She has brought you up in the most eloquent way, whereas, you represents her values. As a co-worker I missed you so much when you left for retirement, but we all will step aside one day, making room for a younger generation. Look at it this way, your mother has given you decades of love, now; the lord has called on her to be in his presence. May her soul rest in peace, and you, Debra, stay strong as you always been, you will be fine.
