Service Details

Our beloved Evelyn Eileen Butler passed away at the age of 94 on June 5, 2016 surrounded by family with loving arms wrapped around her.

Evelyn was born June 3, 1922 to Harold Creighton and Rena Margaret Bowlby. She was better known as “Evie” by her brothers, Harold, Don and Larry and sisters, Margaret and Katherine. And at the age of 94 and 92, Evelyn and her sister Kate talked on the phone EVERY day! Their love and bond had no boundaries.

Evelyn Eileen Bowlby married Harold Lawrence Cross and to this union were four children, Jim, Barbara, Jack and Steve Cross. She is remembered as a very soft spoken, loving mother. She was always there for her children no matter what orneriness they were into. (And trust me, they were ornery!)

Evelyn was the best grandma you could EVER have. Her 13 grandchildren who were blessed to call her grandma are David, Diane, Jeananne, Dick, Deanna, Jimmy, Laura, Tim, Kim, Steven, Rob, Angel and Michelle. Her grandchildren’s best childhood memories are of going to grandma’s and playing baseball, building snow forts, playing tag, catching snakes and sitting at the kitchen table to play grandma a game of Canasta.

To her great and great-great grandchildren, she was known as “Cookie Grandma.” They all knew when they came in the house grandma had cookies, ice cream and applesauce waiting for them.

Evelyn worked for Valley View Village for over 20 years. She devoted many years as a CNA, taking care and giving love to the elderly.

There are not enough words to describe what a wonderful person she was. She was so kind hearted, always smiling and never fretted about anything. She loved her family with all her heart and relished their company. She was truly a gem.

She is survived by her sister, Katherine Briley; brothers, Don Bowlby and Larry (Judy) Bowlby; sons, Steve and Jim (Bonnie) Cross; son in law, Gene Hill; daughter in law, Glenise Waltz; 13 grandchildren and numerous great and great-great grandchildren.

She is predeceased by her parents, Harold and Rena Bowlby; siblings, Margaret and Harold; husband, Harold Cross; second husband, Mike Butler; children, Jack Cross and Barb Hill; grandchild, Angel Hill; and great grandchild, Shayna Rutherford.

Visitation will be held from 6-8pm, Thursday, June 9th with funeral services at 11:00am, Friday, June 10th at Hamilton’s Funeral Home, 605 Lyon St.
