Irene Marie Sloan was born October 9, 1928 to Emma (Dostal) and Alfons Plucar in Elberon, Iowa. Irene enjoyed her childhood growing up on the family farm in Elberon where she attended rural grade school. Irene moved to Tama where she worked her way through high school graduating as Vice President of her class of 1946. Irene made many lifelong friendships through those high school years.

Following graduation, Irene worked as the book keeper for Twin City Ford in Toledo. She and her friends enjoyed dancing and she met her future husband at a dance in Clutier. She married Dallas Sloan of Ladora on April 17, 1949 in the Little Brown Church in the Vale, Nashua, Iowa. Dallas and Irene resided in Toledo and were the parents of Kurt, Diana, Leigh, Darin and Scott. They managed the Tama Dairy Treat for a number of years. While busy with 5 children, Irene and Dallas managed camping trips and traveling through the Midwest. Irene was an astute business owner, successfully selling Stanley Home Products while raising her family and celebrated 50 years in the industry.

Dallas, Irene and family relocated to Altoona in 1972, where she resided until her death on May 29, 2016 at Iowa Lutheran Hospital in Des Moines. Irene was a member of the Altoona United Methodist Church where she participated in several women’s and senior groups.

Irene enjoyed her family most and hosted monthly birthday celebrations with her special angel food cake and home baked pastries. Irene and Dallas were skilled card players and their children and grandchildren all benefited from many fun filled game nights. Irene enjoyed watching her children and grandchildren’s many school activities and sporting events. Her smile was always a welcome sight in the stands or auditoriums.

Irene is preceded in death by her parents, her husband and granddaughter, Brittany. She is survived by her brother, Alvin Plucar, her children, Kurt (Jean) of Carlisle, Diana (Steve) Jacobs of Urbandale, Leigh (Catherine) of Iowa City, Darin (Kelly) of Savannah, Mo., and Scott (Michelle) of Altoona. Also, grandchildren, Kylie (Mike) Davis, Joshua (Beth) Sloan, Brian (Cassie) Stump, Carl (Kayla) Stump, Anessa (Joshua) Jordan, Dustin Sloan, Danalea (David) Blum, Nicole (David) Parsons, Halie Sloan, Ben Sloan and Isaac Sloan. Thirteen great grandchildren with another on the way also survive.

Family will receive visitors from 6:00 pm until 8:00 pm on Monday, June 6th at Hamilton’s Altoona Funeral Home, 105 4th St. SW, Altoona, Iowa, 50009. Funeral services will be held at Altoona United Methodist Church, 602 5th Avenue SW at 10:00 am on Tuesday, June 7th.

The family has requested that memorial contributions be directed to the American Diabetes Association.
